(no subject)

Let's say I wanted to move to Guam (because it's nice and warm!). Could I just pack up and move there the way I can to any state in the union? Do I need some sort of special permission to do it? Do I have to have a passport to travel there? HOW DOES THIS WORK?

(I really wish I was in Guam. DIE WINTER.)

[eta] Wait a minute, no I don't:

Due to the diminished bird population, Guam is said to have 40 times more spiders than neighboring islands, as there are not as many birds on the island to eat the spiders.

DAMN YOU, BROWN TREE SNAKES!

Yeah, it's really sad. The brown tree snake problem hadn't really started when I lived there and the island was filled with birds. Of course, it was also filled with spiders, cockroaches and centipedes even then. My mom used to send me out to catch geckos to bring into the house because they liked to eat insects and cockroach eggs.

As for wanting to move there, I don't think you need any special permission to do it, but I haven't been there in a really long time. When we moved there I remember needing to get some vaccinations that weren't typical, but that was back in the 70s and may not be the case any more.

I think they still have a pretty stiff quarantine for pets, but I believe you can just go. Although flying there is NOT cheap. I haven't been back since we moved away when I was ten... I keep wanting to go, but airfare has been horribly expensive (although it's come down a little bit now that you can fly there from Hawaii instead of having to fly through Japan).

I loved it there... it was a great place to be a kid. And I remember having to wear a jacket whenever the temps dipped into the 70s because it was too cold!

BTW, thank you for giving me a chance to use my Guam icon! Opportunities don't come up very often!

Haha, you're welcome! No, I imagine it doesn't come up very often!

Wow! I had no idea you spent your childhood there! That is so cool! I assume it was military-related? I can't imagine a tropical environment like that without birds; it's so sad to me.

Airfare is so ridiculous. I hate that you haven't been able to visit. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Yep! I'm an Air Force brat... my dad kept putting in for extensions, so we ended up being there for four years (which is an eternity for a military family). My mom had lived there as a child too (my grandfather was in the Navy) and loved it. Even though I haven't been there since I was ten, it still feels like home to me.

That's so cool. Especially that your mom had roots there, too. I really, really hope you get to go back someday!

Yeah, I was gonna mention the snakes. Terrifying to me :).

Apparently they aren't much of a threat to humans, so I'm more concerned about the spiders, but snakes at all do freak me out a little. But bugs are just disgusting to me.
