Same. Shopping is the bane of my life. I don’t hate my body either – like you, I’ve always been thin by nature (even to the point of unhealthiness – I've actually been trying to gain weight for ages, which is impossible to talk about without getting laughed out of the room?), but I DO hate CERTAIN parts of my body and I know that hate is very much wrapped up in cultural standards for beauty (particularly with regards to women being expected to be ~curvy in all the right places~) so basically I hate everything. Also I feel like I don’t actually have any right to complain about anything because I absolutely fit within conventional standards for weight? So there’s that.
I have so many confused feelings about kpop fandom??? I have to admit, one thing I find really strange generally is how people like Sunggyu are considered to be unattractive solely because everyone around him is so conventionally “pretty”? And in other sections of fandom (and kpop culture generally) there seem to be really ridiculous standards for beauty that actually make me get why someone like Woohyun would be so fixated on maintaining his conventional ~hotness – because people will absolutely tear you apart otherwise. But then, this part of fandom with you and Eleonore and co. is A+ and all about appreciating everyone’s looks as they are, so really I feel lucky I know the right people.
That’s awesome to hear that you managed to escape toxic beauty standards from your family while growing up. Your mother sounds like a dream.
Anyway, I’m glad you made this post. YANA! And this kind of thing needs to be talked about among women way more often. /whomp whomp
