Hello, wonderful person who is assigned to write me a Yuletide fic!
Thanks in advance for the story! In my experience, the writing is the most enjoyable part of the Yuletide experience, so I really hope that you have a good time working on the story.
First off, let me say that this year I've picked fandoms where it will be really, really hard not to make me happy, so don't stress out too much!
The one thing that I will say that's most important is this: this year all three of my chosen fandoms feature married couples that I ship. Yay! But! I have the world's worst cheating squick. Please don't have any of these couples cheat on or leave each other. If you don't want to write the couple being couple-y, that's fine. Make the fic as gen as you want it to be--maybe writing something before the couples meet or when one of them has gone away on the world's longest vacation or even after one of them is dead if you feel the need to go there. Just please don't have them betray each other. I don't think this will probably be an issue seeing as how enjoyment of that central married couple's dynamic seems to be pretty central to determining whether or not you will enjoy the text (if you hate Nick/Nora, for example, I can't imagine you volunteering to write for The Thin Man), but I wanted to be extra safe.
Now that that's out of the way, on to the specific fandoms!
1) The Thin Man - gen or Nick/Nora, Nick and Nora Charles, plus Asta, little Nicky and anyone else.
I grew up on these movies, and Nick and Nora are my all-time OTP. Anything that involves them being witty and sparkling and silly and drunk and sophisticated and in love will make me happy. However, if you need a little more guidance, I'd love to see case-fic. I especially enjoy the scenes where Nick gathers all the suspects in the room and lets them talk till someone gives themselves away. If you're not up to something on that scale (I wouldn't be!), a "simple" night at home with these marrieds or a view of how they met/their courtship or even a Nick-throws-a-crazy-party fic would be lovely.
2) the Queen's Thief books - Megan Whalen Turner - gen (Gen, Attolia, Eddis and Costis in any combination) or Attolia/Eugenides
Anything here is going to make me happy. I'm a huge Attolia fangirl, so anything focusing on her is golden. I'd love some shippy Attolia/Gen fic with insights into their marriage, but if you'd rather go the gen (heh) route, an Attolia&Eddis friendship fic would be excellent, as would Gen and Costis interaction. If you want something specific, I don't think you can ever go wrong with attempted assassinations or political plotting. I especially love the way that Turner uses outside perspectives to explore her characters--for instance, the way we see Gen growing into a king and Attolia and Gen's marriage mostly through the eyes of Costis. That sort of thing can be a really fun challenge for a writer, so if you want to do something along those lines, that would be great. Also it just occurred to me that Gen and Attolia as parents might be the best thing ever, and I never say no to good babyfic....
3) Goong/Princess Hours - gen or Shin/Chae-Kyeong
I ship these two like burning, so my ideal fic would be shippy in nature while being very in character. I am especially fond of the way that Shin pretends to be annoyed with Chae-Kyeong but can never quite hide the fact that he thinks she's insanely adorable. So a missing scene or something from the series or a fic about them building their marriage in the future would be lovely. I also love watching the two of them try to navigate what being royalty actually means and what their obligations to tradition and duty are. But if you'd rather go the gen route, I'd really enjoy a story exploring Chae-Kyeong's attempts to fit into palace life or one about Shin trying to figure out who he is within the constricting environment of the palace. Feel free to bring in any of the other characters--Grandma is my favorite, though bringing Yool in and seeing him rebuilding his relationship with his cousin and Chae-Kyeong might be fun.
Feel free to bring in any other characters from any of these fandoms. I'm fine with pretty much any genre, though a tone/mood that matches that of the original text is ideal. Preferrably no crack unless it's the apocalypse--I do love post-apocalyptic fic. Please no character bashing of any characters at all.
I really like het and gen stuff, and my absolute favorite thing in the world is strong characterization. I’m open on what kind of situations you put the characters in, so long as they’re true to themselves. I like plotty stuff and character studies, beautiful prose and experimental stuff--basically I'll follow you anywhere as long as the characters are real. If you keep that in mind, I have no doubt that you'll produce something I'll love.
I'm not a fan of too much smut--exploring sex or how it affects a relationship is fine with me for any of the fandoms where I requested something het, but please focus on the emotions, not the explicit physicality. And if you do go the romance direction, know that what I love most of all is people showing love in ways other than the words "I love you." With Nick and Nora, it's banter and silliness, with Shin and Chae-Kyeong it's Shin's subtle ways of trying to show he cares and Chae-Kyeong's open-heartedness, and with Gen and Attolia it's all about layered conversations and the physicality: that dancing scene, the bloody fingerprints on her cheek, etc. Of course I'm not adverse to them using the l word, I just really like when there's something there to back it up.
