I get what you're saying, and from that perspective it makes sense. I was looking at it from the perspective of someone who wants Sybil to be happy, and I think he made it clear in this episode that he can't do that because he doesn't respect her as much as he should.
And it turns out that when we take that into account, "freedom" may mean quite contradictory things.
