Yeah. And it's funny, because I totally accidentally fit into the hipster aesthetic pretty frequently. If I am not dressed to impress for any particular reason and just pulling out whatever suits me in my closet, it's totally wacky colors/patters, layers that don't always match, worn old shoes: basically the Liz Lemon/Topher Brink look.

But I never feel like I look trendy, because to get that IDGAF look, you have to work really hard at showing how THIS MEANS NOTHING TO ME!!11!! O HOW FUTILE AND MEANINGLESS IS MY OVERPRICED EXISTENCE. whatever.

And you're absolutely right, it's with the fashion angle in particular that you end up with the vertigo, because the act of wearing something non-conventional is in itself positive choice and context, so the "irony" and decontextualization is really just refusal to just admit WHATEVER, NERDS, I LIKE MY PURPLE HAT.
