lirazel: An outdoor scene from the film Picnic at Hanging Rock ([tvd] golden child)

thursday night is the best night

+ First of all, I hope that Elena has an over-the-top, kickass, take charge kind of moment coming up, because the show is wobbling. It's always been firmly grounded in Elena and the fact that A) she doesn't have any superpowers but B) she manages to be smart and resourceful and make decisions that make sense. This was what the show was built around and what makes it more than Twilight. But right now she made one not-so-smart decision and everyone has completely stolen her choices from her. I mean, it was in character. I can believe that of Bonnie and Damon and Jeremy. But it can't last like this because otherwise there's no foundation for the show to hang on and it just becomes a love triangle show with some quite good supporting characters. DO NOT WANT. If all this has been leading up to some big moment in an attempt to earn it, that's cool. Otherwise I'm just annoyed.

+ There should be way, way, way more Damon&Alaric BROTP moments in this show. Because I'm kind of over Damon this season--I haven't liked what they're doing with him--but I do like him interacting with Alaric (who is AWESOME), so more of that. Also more Damon&Stefan brotherly moments. And Damon&Liz. Basically, I want a show full of platonic!Damon. Because when he's trying to be sexy, he starts doing the eyebrow thing, and I start doing the eyeroll thing. So more BFF moments for him!

+ And more Elena&Bonnie! And Caroline interacting with another lady! Because the lady BFFs haven't gotten that much time together this season and I am disappoint.

+ The ridiculously large number of Tyler/Caroline graphics on tumblr is making me nervous.

+ Because I still am not invested in him. Yes, his situation is sad and he seems to be coming around, but he's so yawn-worthy and bland to me. The only good thing about him is that when he's around, so is Caroline. And she's such a sweetheart. I adore her.

+ Jeremy continues to be hot.

+ I do not like this Luka kid, even aside from him manipulating Bonnie. He's just a ridiculously uncharismatic actor. There is nothing there. Bad casting decision, that.

+ BONNIE. JEREMY GOT HOT. GET YOU SOME OF THAT, GIRL. [Aside: Lil Sis has a huge girlcrush on Bonnie and is madly in love with Jeremy and is shipping this like crazy, which I find unreasonably adorable.]

+ That one glimpse I had of Matt mad me so happy! My boy! Whenever I see him, I think of how Julie Plec calls Zach "Pudding Pop" and also of how adorable he looks in glasses. I have such a crush on that boy. Absurdly adorable.

+ All of the chains and shirtlessness in the Tyler scenes made me think of all those slave!character manips that float around fandom. And it also made me wonder what someone who had no idea about the existence of the supernatural would think if they stumbled in on Caroline and Tyler in chains....

+ The bone breaking stuff was disgusting, and I feel like those sequences went on way, way, way too long.

+ I like that Elijah came around because it set Elena up with a chance to have some agency. Yay rah! Though obviously his motives are suspect, but I quite like that, and I quite like the actor playing him.

+ The one Damon moment I really liked was when he called Caroline "Vampire Barbie" because that is the greatest nickname ever for her.

+ WHAT IS IT WITH LAUREN COHAN AND GETTING TORN TO PIECES BY CANINES? WEIRDEST TYPCASTING EVER. ALSO HER HAIR CONTINUES TO FRUSTRATE ME. SHE IS SO PRETTY WHY ARE THEY RUINING HER?

+ Am I seriously supposed to believe that Rose cares enough about Damon to jump in front of the wolf's attack? Because I don't buy that. I was fine with them together because it's just friendship + sex, which made sense for both of them. But I can't buy her really caring about him. I can fanwank it that she's latched onto him because she's on her own for the first time in centuries (Trevor! *sob*), but I hate having to fanwank.

+ So the Elena/Stefan scene at the end made me feel all ~conflicted~. I'm pretty sure I'm never going to ship it hardcore because there's nothing in their dynamic to draw me in (except for mutual respect, which I do think they have for the most part, and that's always sexy), but I have decided that their adorability has won me over. And I like that they're pretty functional and make each other happy, but that isn't really enough for me to ship. There has to be some spark between me and the couple, and I don't have that with them. However! I'm pretty much over Elena/Damon (at least for a long, long time--I want to see them be BFFs first and him learn to respect her and not manhandle and threaten her because NOT COOL and then potentially after that it would be okay), so I've decided I don't really ship when it comes to Elena (except that I ship Elena/her own agency) and I can just enjoy her being cute with Stefan instead of really caring too much.

+ Speaking of Stefan, I missed him this episode when he didn't have anything to do. It really amazes me how much he's grown on me, though I like to see him interact with people who aren't Elena. What happened to him big brothering Caroline? MORE OF THAT, PLEASE?

Do y'all have reaction posts? Link me please?

I am still trying to figure out whether I loved or hated this week's Community. Obviously Danny Pudi is made of awesomeness, but I felt like an entire episode of the claymation thing was a bit much? And it was hard for me to invest? Although I did take great delight in a few moments where they so exactly replicated one of the characters' expressions/postures/etc. I think, though, that maybe sometimes the show gets a bit too gimmicky? Like with the zombie episode? I can't figure out why the gimmick worked so brilliantly in "Modern Warfare" and why it's bothered me other times (also, I still do not like the Mean Girls/trampoline episode. Just weird). On the other hand, I guess technically the bottle episode was a gimmick episode, and that one worked for me. I need to think about this more.

Don't watch VDiaries. I started the first episode, Stefan/Elena reminded me too much of Angel/Buffy, and I couldn't go through that again.

I agree with you about Community in some ways. Didn't like trampoline episode at all, the zombie was okay.
I enjoyed this weeks, and loved the paintball one.

In general it's a great show. I love the characters, but if they start getting TOO gimmicky they're gonna lose it.

Iiiiiii loved Community! And I am not someone who is big on the gimmicky episodes (proof: I think Modern Warfare is AMAZING, but in no way do I think it's the standard to which all episodes should rise and meet), but there was something about this Christmas episode that really, really worked for me.

I think it's because, while obviously mimicking the classic Christmas specials of yore, it still kept a foot in reality. Which, yeah, HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN WHEN THEY'RE IN STOP MOTION ANIMATION? That was just the visual. Aesthetics. Peel back the fancy effects and you're forced to remember that these characters are all actually sitting around the study group table, doing absolutely NONE of what we're seeing, just for Abed. They're literally sitting there role-playing these scenarios out because one of their own has had something so sad and traumatic happen to him, he catapulted headfirst into a DELUSION.

So, yes. Gimmicky. But gimmicky with layers, which is how I like it.

(And maybe my soft spot is because I watched it with my toddler-aged nephews and they enjoyed it nearly as much as I did.)

Yes, Bonnie you silly girl - Luka is bad, bad news.

I like that Elijah came around because it set Elena up with a chance to have some agency. Yay rah! Though obviously his motives are suspect, but I quite like that, and I quite like the actor playing him.

Nods. The fact that he is completely shifty is what makes him interesting. And Elena had better watch her step around him.

There should be way, way, way more Damon&Alaric BROTP moments in this show.
Nods again. The best bromance on the show.

Linky stuff .

.... how can you not love an episode with a teddy bear pierce???!?!? HOW?

I thought this week's Community was OK. In the end, it focused on the found family aspect of the show which is one of my favourite parts. I didn't find it particularly funny, though, and although there were some really great moments overall I think I kind of missed everyone's real faces. As for the gimmick episodes, I think they work if they are rooted in character moments rather than in plotty plotty plot plot. I liked the bottle episode so much because ultimately it was all about the characters and not the situation. "Modern Warfare" and the zombie episode were a ton of fun, but I don't want too many episodes like that because inevitably a bunch of the characters drop off the canvas early in the episode and I prefer the group dynamic. Of course, I am going to now contradict myself because the conspiracy theory episode, which almost exclusively focused on Jeff and Annie, was one of my favourites of this season. I guess I just love Jeff/Annie a lot. And pillow forts.

I too am over shipping Elena with anyone other than her agency. Bonnie and Jeremy and Damon locking her up really bugged me because... well, it's her life and if she wants to be stupid, that's her call. Though I don't think Elena's stupid so this is all frustrating and the appearance of Elijah interests me. Stefan/Elena was actually kind of sweet at the end but again, they still lack chemistry sooooo... nothing there really.

As far as Caroline/Tyler goes I was all for shipping the BFF element and THEN THIS EPISODE HAPPENED AND STOLE ME. I'm honestly not sure what happened but I'm totally sold and want to read piles of fanfic. I didn't think the transformation went on too long - considering Mason's first transformation allegedly took over 5 hours, I thought this went pretty quickly.

Luke continues to bore me. And Bonnie/Jeremy is squicking me out though I'm not sure why. Maybe because I want Bonnie to live :p Heh.

New werewolf - Jules? - is totally awesome. I'm excited for her character after the hiatus :)

+ The bone breaking stuff was disgusting, and I feel like those sequences went on way, way, way too long.

Agreed. I was like, 'yes, I get it, he's turning into a werewolf, can we move forward, please?'

+ WHAT IS IT WITH LAUREN COHAN AND GETTING TORN TO PIECES BY CANINES? WEIRDEST TYPCASTING EVER. ALSO HER HAIR CONTINUES TO FRUSTRATE ME. SHE IS SO PRETTY WHY ARE THEY RUINING HER?

I know, right? So weird. But at least on SPN she had better hair.

I want to see them be BFFs first and him learn to respect her and not manhandle and threaten her because NOT COOL and then potentially after that it would be okay)

Agreed. That is an arc I could get behind.

And my reaction to the episode is here:
