lirazel: An outdoor scene from the film Picnic at Hanging Rock ([cmty] splinters are inevitable)

Odds'n'Ends

+ If you haven't checked out the Bechdel Test Fic-a-Thon Masterlist, you so should, because there is much great fic there and [livejournal.com profile] angearia has put in a ton of effort in compiling it. Thanks so much to everybody who has participated!

+ In not-unrelated news, there's a new fic-a-thon on the block: The NOT MY FANDOM Fest!

Welcome to the first ever Not My Fandom Fest! The fest will be running from tonight, Thursday, October 14 through the weekend until sometime on Monday, October 18! Pimp to your friends! Feel free to use the banner! Tell everyone you know! We're going to have fun, guys!

We all joke about "fannish osmosis," and this comment ficathon is going to put that to the test. The object is to write a ficlet for a fandom you're not a part of based solely on what you've learned from your friends list and fandom at large. Silly, serious, the tone and approach are up to you. The only rule is that you can't write for a fandom that you have actually seen the source material for.

Obviously, hilarity ensues. Check it out!

+ And I even wrote Legend of the Seeker fic! It's probably not that funny, but I tried!

+ Also, I was kind of loopy on Benadryl at the time because somehow I'm managing to have horrible allergies and can't find my knockoff Claratin, but I think that Community was pretty glorious last night. I'll have to rewatch it to be able to tell. I do know that I have such a crush on the wonderfulness that is Donald Glover. Just sayin'.

+ Everyone has been going on and on about how good Glee was this week, so even though I stopped watching sometime during the back nine of last season, I decided to check it out anyways.

It was good, but not good enough to get me to watch again. Though Santana and Mercedes singing? GREATEST THING EVER THEY SHOULD HAVE WON.

Mike Chang is hotness defined. I always thought so, but then he was singing that song from A Chorus Line and I was like HAI THERE.

Uh, what's up with summarily dismissing Puck and bringing in that annoying new kid and trying to get us to ship him with Quinn? NO THANKS. I want the show to really go there with Quinn and Puck's relationship, and I think they could be awesome together if the writing was there. But then again, this show has some of the most inconsistent writing I have EVER SEEN, so I doubt it'll happen.

I have never, not for one moment, bought the Rachel/Finn relationship (it always seemed entirely one-sided and based on Rachel's dream of getting the popular boy, not on either of their characters) but they were hilariously awesome together. Ships should always plot and scheme together.

Brittany is awesome.

I like Kurt's relationship with his dad. It's definitely the thing about the show that feels most real.

I didn't want to murder Will this time! Of course, that's mostly because he wasn't in it much. AND I DID NOT MISS HIM I HATE YOU WILL SCHEUSTER.

Artie is a huge, huge, huge asshole. I kind of hate him a lot now.

Yeah, probably not going to start watching the show again. Though I probably will check in when The Groff or Kristen Chenoweth show up.

+ Apparently there is a meme where you're supposed to post all of your icons with female characters in them? Um, that's like 75% of my (many, many) icons. So I'm just going to link you to them at the source and you can admire them there. They're very pretty.

+ I'm sure there were some other things I'd been meaning to share, but now I've forgotten what they were. So enjoy your Friday!

I AM SORRY YOU'RE SICK. *pets* THERE THERE.

What's up, girlie? I just got a lot of errands done this morning, went grocery shopping and posted a story. Go me! *feels productive*

Allergies suck. I want to rip my sinuses right out of my face.

Work is boring. Going out with Lil Sis tonight. Freaking out about [livejournal.com profile] marketchippie's S7 meta. Reblogging pictures of pretty people and quotes about feminism on tumblr. Going to try to write my [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy entry this weekend. That's pretty much it.

Go you indeed! I'm so glad you're getting stuff done! There's no better feeling that checking things of the to-do list!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
PREACH. I hate my sinuses with a fiery passion.

[livejournal.com profile] marketchippie's meta is LOVE. So much LOVE. Haha, it balances out nicely the Spike critique on [livejournal.com profile] eleusis_walks journal, too. We have the pro and con sides! I rather like it. 'Tis fun.

Well, I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say there's no better feeling, but it feels quite shiny!

I'm bored. We should do something interesting to entertain ourselves.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
SINUSES SUCK. We should all have them removed.

Her meta leaves me FLAILING WITH JOY over how much she GETS things. Especially on first watch. It took me a while to reach the point where I could vocalize this stuff, and the fact that she can right off the bat.... *is in awe*

Hee! I was exaggerating, obviously!

We should. I'll think on this.

[identity profile] blackfrancine.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I do know that I have such a crush on the wonderfulness that is Donald Glover. Just sayin'.

Donald Glover is my true love. This is a fact. He has a standup special that I saw on Comedy Central, which you should absolutely catch if you can. And I will tell you why: A) He is funny. B) He passes feminist scrutiny. Which for a male standup comic? That is something special. He might not be perfect (or he might be, I don't really remember, I saw it a few months ago)--but there was never a moment where my lady-hackles raised. So. It always fills me with joy when someone I like proves themselves to be great.

In re: Glee--
Brittney is awesome. I think she's my favorite. She and Kurt. And of course Sue.

This long response that is about absolutely nothing is courtesy of the fact that I'm sick of working. I've been editing the same stupid thing for the last 4 days. I'm ready to stab myself with a red pen. Would I qualify for workman's comp, do you think?

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I adore him. He's smart as a whip and adorable with BRILLIANT comedic timing and I want to marry him. I definitely need to hunt down that special, I'm so glad you mentioned it! Yay for not raising your lady-hackles!

We have similar taste in Glee characters. I also like Quinn.

Ha! I'm bored out of my mind. I would argue on your behalf re: the workman's comp.

Sometimes, I write the best things while under the influence of allergy medicine. Sudafed is like crack.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha! I can only imagine!

I think you'll greatly enjoy the TWW entry over at the Not My Fandom Fest. It made me giggle with its truthiness.
ext_82418: (CJ & Gail)

[identity profile] magisterequitum.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's either really crazy or good. I wrote this about a month ago while hopped up on Sudafed, woke up the next morning, and was like: when did I decide to fill this prompt then and when did I write this?

OMG. I just found it. LOL forever. It makes me think of the one time my sister came through the room while watching at home. After ten minutes she said, "So, basically they just walk around and talk?"

[identity profile] magisterequitum.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I also have to say that this Not My Fandom fest has made my morning.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay!

[identity profile] gryfndor-godess.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who can't stand Artie. I feel like he gets away with treating Tina and Brittany like crap b/c he's in a wheelchair, and that is a TERRIBLE way to portray handy-capable people. Grr argh.

Hope your allergies get better!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Though, on the other hand, some people in wheelchairs are jerks, just like some people who are able-bodied are jerks. But yeah, the whole thing makes me uncomfortable.

Thanks! Here's hoping!

WHY ISN'T SOMEONE POSTING ONE TREE HILL YET. *wants SO BADLY to crackfic the hell out of that dog-eats-guy's heart scene*

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHA THAT WOULD BE EPIC! I'm pretty sure you can request fandoms if you like... *nudges you*

[identity profile] redsilverchains.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I JUST DID! And Gossip Girl because my fandom osmosis rate for that is ridiculously high.

(Oh, btw, are you up for beta-ing something this weekend? There's this bit of Glee/Skins nonsense that I'm working on and I need a second opinion.)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
WIIIIIN. SO EXCITED!

And yes! Almost certainly! Send it my way!

[identity profile] redsilverchains.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! *just sent it*

[identity profile] marketchippie.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
GET WELL SOON, LOVE.

Also: Ships should always plot and scheme together.

YES YES YES SO MUCH WORD.

Also: *looks at top thread* :D I love youuuuu!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! It's more a horrible annoyance than flat-out sickness, but stil. Unpleasantness.

I love scheming couples. I will always love the first season of Gossip Girl for giving me Blair and Chuck scheming. Besides, anyone who says established relationships can't be fun doesn't know what they're talking about. LIES.

I love you, tooooo!

Good morning! (It's still morning in California, and I slept late, okay?)

- Glee: Puck going to juvie was the equivalent of saying "Puck left us to pursue a film career." Not cool, show. The show got a good rep this week because it was the first pretty good episode in the old school, pre-hype sense of the word that didn't break your heart with Kurt/Dad OTP-ness or have slightly problematic religious debate. And Brittany is slowly becoming the entire reason I watch this show. To Artie: "I thought you were a robot." And Artie's devolving into the "nice guy" of the show, isn't he?

- Community: While it wasn't quite as good as "Modern Warfare," I do have to share my joy in a GIF spam:

Photobucket

Poor Abed! But I totally loved him doing the Gary Sinise role from Apollo 13
Photobucket

New OTP? Or do I just begin to ship things at the drop of a hat?
Photobucket

- Not My Fandom Fic Fest: So much love. Adored your LotS fic! I wrote some two-bit NCIS and Smallville fic, but they weren't half as amusing as your stuff. I'm dying to do some Torchwood when I come back from work!

- Speaking of work, how is the job hunt going? Working at the office still? Bookstore? Heard from the library job? I gotta say, libraries are perfect for introverts because when you talk to other people, it's all about books! My mother loves her job as a librarian (her boss? not so much), but if you really want to go for something like that, think about library science grad school. Or you can move out to California with me and work with my Mama - they're hiring around here! We could be roomies!

- Have I mentioned how much I'm loving the Bechdel Ficathon? I have? Oh, well, I'll mention it again. I love you and Emmie for the Bechdel Test Ficathon!! Yay!

That's all I got. Gotta get ready for work.

Good morning, love!

SO HE'S GONE FOR GOOD? *clutches heart* My Quinn/Puck dreams will NEVER COME TRUE????

And Artie's devolving into the "nice guy" of the show, isn't he?

YES HE SO IS.

Nothing will ever be as good as "Modern Warfare," but I still really enjoyed it.

But I totally loved him doing the Gary Sinise role from Apollo 13

I know, right?

Oh no! My internet here at work is blocking your gifs! What's the OTP?

Oh, I'm sure yours were very funny! I will check them out!

Still at the office, haven't heard from the library. Got the bookstore job but then this job didn't end, so I've pretty much given up on that. No big loss, though since it was part time and minimum wage. I don't know how long I'll be here--hopefully until I get something full time. I'm signed up with an agency that says they'll have no problem placing me in temp positions which makes me want to scream "DON'T YOU KNOW THAT IN MOVIES/TV WHEN PEOPLE HAVE AWFUL LIVES, THE WRITERS USE THEM BEING A TEMP TO PROVE JUST HOW AWFUL???" But oh, well.

I have thought about grad school right now, but they're cutting library budgets all over so I'm not sure it's worth the time/money/debt at the moment. I'm keeping my options open.

Or you can move out to California with me and work with my Mama - they're hiring around here! We could be roomies!

Don't even think I'm not tempted by this.

Yay! We love you for participating!

Have a hopefully not-sucky time at work!

[identity profile] eilowyn.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
- Don't know if Puck is gone for good, but the Juvie excuse bugged me.

- OTP is Britta/Troy and the GIF is her landing on him when the shuttle shakes.

Yay for open options. And Yay for a not-sucky time at work!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
- Even though I've given up on the show, I will be pissed if he doesn't come back.

- I assumed! You know, they had weirdly intense chemistry in the one where they danced.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2010-10-16 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Even though I've given up on the show, I will be pissed if he doesn't come back.

I'm 99.9% positive he will. I heard it was a money thing; they're paying Mike Chang's actor more, so they cut a bit of Puck to keep the budget balanced. Which considering how much Glee makes and how much they spend of costumes, etc, strikes me as a bit ridiculous, but there you have it.

"DON'T YOU KNOW THAT IN MOVIES/TV WHEN PEOPLE HAVE AWFUL LIVES, THE WRITERS USE THEM BEING A TEMP TO PROVE JUST HOW AWFUL???"

Oh, pooh-pooh. I think all that means is Hollywood thinks if you're not making six figures, you must be on poverty's doorstep. Or something. I've done temp work and had no troubles.

[identity profile] blackfrancine.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
OK. So, I just reread this post because I'm a weirdo, and also because I finally finished all my stupid work, so now I can goof off. And, yes, you're right: We do have similar taste in Glee characters. Because yep. Artie's a jerk (which I kind of like that he's a jerk--it sort of detracts from their whole identity politics/stereotyping game). Will is insufferable. And I was JUST thinking Wednesday night, as I drove myself home from playing pub trivia, how nonsensical that relationship was. It just doesn't make any sense from either of their sides. At least Rachel/Jesse made some sense. It felt *possible* Rachel/Finn just feels wrong. All wrong.

Also! Did you see Jane Lynch on SNL? They did a Glee spoof skit. And it was horrible! Sometimes I just want to punch SNL in its collective homophobic mouth.

[identity profile] blackfrancine.livejournal.com 2010-10-15 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
And by "that relationship," I mean Rachel/Finn.

[identity profile] moonlightrick.livejournal.com 2010-10-16 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, you! Community was definitely awesome last night - it may have helped that I'm a sci-fi girl, but I loved it :D

Glee: I'm also pretty much not watching it, but in the way that I still am, because the rest of my family do (at varying points in time) so it's on anyway. I'm pretty sure Puck will be back, those I gave Glee an odd look for the randomness. Brittany is A++, and Artie has always been a jackass, but I think he's getting worse; I scowl and walk away as soon as he shows up on screen now. I am learning to love Kurt via his relationship with Dad, though, who's pretty much the only sane adult on the show <33

Re: icons - haha, I...show my bias with icons, and usually just have women in them (or at least one to balance out the guy)? :P I love your icons, though :D

[identity profile] ever-neutral.livejournal.com 2010-10-16 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
Mike Chang is hotness defined. I always thought so, but then he was singing that song from A Chorus Line and I was like HAI THERE.

I KNOW RIGHT.

Rachel and Finn were hysterical with the scheming. "WE ARE SHOCKED. SHOCKED."

Uh, what's up with summarily dismissing Puck and bringing in that annoying new kid and trying to get us to ship him with Quinn? NO THANKS.

SOLIDARITY. IDK, I don't hate Sam, or Sam/Quinn. But dude. It's Puck and Quinn. Come now. I'm not really sure what the writers' deal with. Are they too difficult to write? I can see how that would be, and this lack of commitment to the pairing sort of fits the characters' ambivalent commitment to each other. Eh. I'm hoping this Sam/Quinn thing actually makes something HAPPEN. Sigh. I am such a breadcrumb shipper.

Artie is a huge, huge, huge asshole. I kind of hate him a lot now.

Hmm. I've seen this sentiment a lot, but I'm not sure I'm totally on board. I mean, I really don't think he's any bigger an asshole than Rachel or Puck or Quinn or Finn or Santana, etc. Possibly Artie doesn't hit my squick button in the same way.

[identity profile] zombie_boogie.livejournal.com 2010-10-16 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
LOL that "not my fandom" meme is the best ever. It's kind of amazing that a lot of these fics sum up exactly what I know about certain fandoms (like Lost - polar bear!).

I tried to stick it out with Glee, but I'm only going to tune in a) if I hear an episode is good from people's opinions I respect/there are no mixed reviews (kind of like this week's episode) and/or b) when The Groff graces my television again. Rachel/Jesse was one of my only reasons for sticking with the back nine and I'm still extremely bitter with the way they "resolved" that storyline.
