Can I just say that y'all are ACES at giving prompts? Seriously. Amazing, amazing prompts.

I am now mad at myself because I should have waited till I got off work tonight before posting the fic-a-thon so that I could ACTUALLY WRITE FOR IT.

Ah, well. Tonight. It's a date.

The prompts are the easy part! Fun!

They are the easy part, definitely. I can't wait till the fics start popping up!

It's good timing, in any case. Does Columbus Day give you guys the long weekend?

I don't get any time off, thankfully. I'm adamently opposed to the holiday. But there might be some people who get off for it.

Oh? I know nothing about it, apart from that it lands on the same day as my Thanksgiving Monday. Although I suppose if I thought about it, I could sort of guess what the theme of it was :P

Columbus basically started both the influx of Europeans to the new world AND the genocide of the native peoples of the Americas. It wouldn't be so bad that we have such a holiday if we also had like an Indigenous Peoples holiday or something. But America refuses to talk about the way we killed off at least 19 million people while stealing land that belonged to them, so that's never going to happen.

Hey. One of my best friends is full blood Alabama Coushatta--and she's pretty mellow about almost everything--but if you want to get her started on a rant--bring up A) Columbus Day and B) the fact that Native American Month is November--because American Indians can't exist outside of the context of pilgrims and beltbuckles and the people who brought them their doom in pox-filled blankets.

Huh. I think I was channeling her just then.

Yeah, basically America is EVIL when it comes to our treatment of American Indians. EVIL. And we refuse to acknowledge it.

BTW, did you see that mini-documentary they linked to on ontd_feminism recently? It was really good and powerful.

[identity profile] blackfrancine.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I didn't see that. I'll have to go back and look for it. Unless--will it make me cry? Because I don't know if I can deal with crying.

And can we also address how completely nonsensical it is to single out Columbus? I mean, there were scores of other dudes all doin' the same thing--some of which got here before Columbus did. And they all had less-than-altruistic motivations.

You really would think that we'd re-evaluate the Columbus Day situation, wouldn't you? Just rename it--make it Cesar Chavez Day or Wovoka Day or Pina Colada Day. Everyone would still get time off work--and that's what really matters, isn't it? Can't we all stand together and enjoy having a day off in the name of someone who didn't set into action an irreversible course of evil?

Hmmm...I'm not sure. I didn't cry--it just made me furious. But it might?

YES.

Can't we all stand together and enjoy having a day off in the name of someone who didn't set into action an irreversible course of evil?

AMEN.

[identity profile] hkath.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, that. Well, we're no better, obviously. Our treatment of First Nations people is appalling in this day and age; in the past, I'd describe it as horrific. But it never really occurred to me to think about the name, so I didn't realize you had a whole separate conquering-the-natives holiday apart from Thanksgiving. That's messed up!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, everything about our treatment is awful.

But it never really occurred to me to think about the name, so I didn't realize you had a whole separate conquering-the-natives holiday apart from Thanksgiving.

Yeah, it's very messed up. And your icon is extremely appropriate.
