OMGWTFBBQ?!?!?!?!
These are my ridiculously incoherent and perhaps fleeting thoughts on the season premiere!
+ Bonnie is a badass.
+ Stefan threatening John? Yeah, that was pretty badass, too. I always find him 10000xs more interesting whenever he's being dark. Whereas I find Damon more interesting as he struggles to decide whether being good is worth it. Which is pretty much how I feel about Angel and Spike, respectively (well, about Angel when he isn't with Cordy or Connor. I like him good then).
+ John isn't dead! Yay! Which means David Anders could pop back up at any time!
+ Did John's explanation of the reason the Gilbert parents died not make sense to anyone else? Snapping someone's death isn't supernatural. Unless by "supernatural" he meant, "perpetrated by a supernatural being"? Which seems like a weird distinction to me.
+ Katherine is such an awesome bitch. And there's really no other word for her.
+ Okay, making us think Jeremy was dying twice? Oh, silly writers.
+ There were one or two lines that made me wince. I don't remember what they are right now (on the rewatch, I'll make note of them), but it really reminded me how hard dialogue is to write.
+ I still really can't care about/like Tyler Lockwood. I think it might be the actor? He aggravates me. I really am not excited about him being a bigger character this season.
+ Damon's relationship with Sheriff Forbes is really fascinating to me. I think if you pressed him, you'd find that he really does respect her. And obviously she just trusts him so much. When she finds out he's a vamp, she's gonna be devastated.
+ I'm finding myself shipping Stefan/Katherine even more, in a twisted sort of Angel/Darla way. I think he's going to be absolutely fascinating whenever she's around, and I'm anxious to find out if her feelings for Stefan are real.
+ EXCUSE ME WHERE IS ALARIC? AND WHY ARE HE AND DAMON NOT BROMANCING IT UP??? Seriously, they better have all kinds of scenes together this season or I'mma be very not pleased.
+ Poor, poor, poor Damon! *sobs* When both of the women he's cared about told him they'd never pick him, they'd always pick Stefan, it just broke my little heart. It was soooooooo Spike-esque. I mean, it was basically Cecily and Buffy telling Spike he's beneath them. Please tell me other people had that thought. Seriously, he reminds me more of Spike and Stefan reminds me more of Angel all the time.
+ That said, as bad as I felt for him, that was supremely stupid trying to kill Jeremy. And no, I don't think he saw the ring. But Elena was right: he does want her to hate him so that he can convince himself that he hates himself and he can try to make himself not feel again. I love how she gets him.
+ And I love her telling him she cared about him and he was better than that. Love it. Perfect moment.
+ I'm actually kind of glad that she's all OMG I HATE DAMON NOW because that means they won't rush the romance. Which was what I was worried about with this season. So now they'll have to really rebuild their relationship in order to get us to believe it, and I approve of that.
+ CAROLINE. I guess this means she'll be a vampire now? An adorable, bubbly vampire? BUT SHE BETTER NOT BE REALLY DEAD. EVER. I LOVE ME SOME CAROLINE TOO MUCH. Also she and Matt remain adorable.
+ I think this was a really solid episode? But I don't know yet. I'll have to watch it once more and digest. Still, my first instinct right now is that the writers had the perfect final line for this episode: GAME ON. SEASON TWO IS GONNA BE EPIC.

-> I'm not always on the Bonnie boat. Tonight? Awesome. Also, I'm kind of wondering what she'll do to Damon next time she sees him? Because obviously he doesn't die (or stay dead, anyway), so, what.
-> Yeah, the ring thing...was kind of >_> I mean, vampires and werewolves and rings that protect people, but narrative internal consistency? Not so much. Or maybe just some very interesting quick talk that would impress a supreme court judge, idek.
-> Ngl, Jeremy dead = in my top Jeremy scenes (which don't include Anna/Jeremy, because those were Anna scenes). =/= fan :P
-> Yeah, Tyler...I'm very meh, at best. His scenes (with that annoying kid who lives in Elena's house) are sort of when I feel free to do other things, like check my hair for split ends :p Maybe he'll get more interesting, or at least more amusing this season?
-> I've heard that Alaric and Damon will be very much with the bromancing, so he should be back soon... It was kind of weird not to see him; then again, given how much they crammed into the first five minutes, let alone the whole episode, I can give them a little leeway to be a little focused-group!crazy.
-> I watched with my sister, and we were both cringing from the Damon/Katherine scene to the end. Ugh, so, so sad and horrible. Really could not have gone worse, and Elena didn't have a clue. As for Jeremy...O_o not good, though I'm sure Ian's happy that his character's back at being the bad(-ish?) guy *g*
-> Caroline's last scene with Katherine = O_O DDDDDD:!!! She has to be a vamp now, and I second adorable!bubbly!vamp!Caro. If they wreck her character, I'm going to be so pissed. And, and Caroline/Matt! My brain is still scrambling and unhappy! And D:! (Also, how about a discussion between Elena and Caroline about all the stuff that went down with Caroline last season about which Elena never told her? :O)
Besides the fact that I would then have a LOT more reading to do, and reason for panic with schoolWHY CAN'T IT BE A WEEK FROM NOW AGAIN?no subject
I like Bonnie a lot, because I can always understand where she's coming from. I think she always tries to do the right thing, and I like that. I'm also anxious to see her reaction to Damon.
Not so much. Or maybe just some very interesting quick talk that would impress a supreme court judge, idek.
Yeah, I'd been impressed by the continuity up until now, but that was too much. I didn't see why the writers didn't just say that their dad took his ring off this one time. I think we're going to end up finding out that the parents were murdered, of course, so maybe someone tricked him into taking it off? There's lots that they could do.
Hey, I'm totally with you on Jeremy being dead and not caring. I loved him with Anna because, as you say, Anna. OH I MISS HER. I just thought the two times thing was a little OTT, especially as they put Caroline in danger twice, too.
are sort of when I feel free to do other things, like check my hair for split ends :p Maybe he'll get more interesting, or at least more amusing this season?
Same. I don't know. I just don't care.
I've heard that Alaric and Damon will be very much with the bromancing, so he should be back soon... REALLY? *squeals* I actually didn't much mind that he wasn't here this episode, because, as you say, there really wasn't room for him to be. I just wanted confirmation that he'll be back and interacting with Damon. So I am happy now!
f they wreck her character, I'm going to be so pissed. And, and Caroline/Matt! My brain is still scrambling and unhappy!
I KNOW. I will die. Or kill someone. I need my Caroline! And my Matt/Caroline! NEED.
Yes, I would absolutely love for Elena and Bonnie to sit Caroline down and explain everything to her. She's always on the outside, and it hurts me. I'm just glad she has Matt and he seems to really be standing by her now.
I KNOW HOW WILL WE WAIT? I watched the first season in practically one sitting, so it's going to be even harder on me, this waiting for a week between episodes!
no subject
I am eagerly awaiting for the Big Reveal to the Sheriff that Damon is a vampire.
I did miss Alaric. But I guess there wasn't room for him?
Damon did have it hard this episode. I hope he doesn't go totally bad again. But "killing" Jeremy was not a good moment for him.
no subject
I must admit, at first I was really pissed at Damon. But I just re watched the episode and Elena hurt Damon too. A lot. "I'm surprised you thought I would kiss you back." Ouch. That was hurtful but then she was so honest and real in that last scene, ugh. She cares. SO MUCH. And she is lying to herself a little and I'm glad Damon acknowledged that but so not the time.
And ugh! This is going to be crazy, watching them come back from this. And the worst part is she called it, when she was all you get angry and cover it up and do something stupid. But also her we're close enough now. Ugh!
Poor baby, I felt so horrible for him with Katherine. I was cringing. At least maybe now they're done, yes? I hope so.
Stefan/Katherine are great. I LIKED STEFAN TONIGHT. And it was all because of his interactions with Katherine. He even smiled. I love it. And when she held out her hand and he walked past him. Ah! And then don't flirt with me Katherine with his smile. !@!!
And Katherine in general is so HBIC I can't not love her and her badass way.
The John thing makes no sense. I suspect maybe something is being covered up there. Their whole death just baffles me. It couldn't have been an accident.
Caroline! I must admit I suspected that when Jeremy didn't turn and then Damon gave her his blood, but only because I read an article where Ian mentioned Damon being a sort of mentor to a new born vamp. I am so excited for this storyline. Caroline is so not a vampire seeing her all bubbly and watching Jersey Shore as a Vampire is going to be great. DONT SCREW IT UP WRITERS! But also, what about Matt?
no subject
She's not gonna take it well at all!
There really wasn't room for him, and I get that. I just needed to be reassured that he'd be back. Which I have, so now I'm okay.
Definitely not a good moment. I think he's going to find it harder than he thinks to be "bad." He's going to find that it's impossible to turn off that switch in your head, no matter how hard he tries. I think it'll be great.
no subject
That was hurtful but then she was so honest and real in that last scene, ugh. She cares. SO MUCH. And she is lying to herself a little and I'm glad Damon acknowledged that but so not the time.
Agreed. Except that I'm not sure that's she's lying to herself. I think she might not even be aware of the connection they have. I think she knows she cares about him (clearly, as she said so), but I think it's gonna take more than has happened so far to get her really feel romantic towards him. Which I'm willing to wait for.
I really do hope that Katherine and Stefan are done. I want him to want to kill her. I don't find him interesting with her, really. UNLIKE STEFAN WHO IS SO GREAT WITH HER.
Katherine's going to cause so much trouble, and it's going to be epic.
I suspect maybe something is being covered up there. Their whole death just baffles me. It couldn't have been an accident.
Oh, I think they were definitely murdered. I'm just interested in who did it!
DONT SCREW IT UP WRITERS! But also, what about Matt?
EXACTLY. She could make an awesome adorable vamp, but I want her still with Matt. And happy. So what I'm thinking is that he pulls away initially when he finds out about her vampness, but then they grow back together again because he's a nice guy and really loves her.
no subject
The rest of the stuff though moved along quite nicely.
no subject
I suppose it could just be the ~fantasy~ element, which, no, but sometimes writers rely too much on the "not real! new rules! move along!" aspect. Or, well, maybe John is lying. Or there's a conspiracy.
Anna broke my heart. The level of awesome dropped dangerously when she died D: The two deaths could be just for the parallel--both of them were saved by vamp blood, but in the end it was only the ring that managed to save (one of) them. It also helped carry the suspense re: Caroline's (well, and Jeremy's :\) fate from the finale through the premiere. IDK, I'm just glad that Caroline is not dead-dead, even if that means we have to spend more time on Jeremy.
Part of me loved that Caroline and Matt were unaware of and had a life separate of the whole vamp element, despite being greatly affected by it, but that Elena (and Bonnie) never bothered to tell her, hey, Damon? maybe run, or at least wear this pretty vervain necklace/what-have-you. How hard would that have been?
And I'm hoping Matt is very there for her, especially over the next several episodes *frets* They're adorable, and I love both of them, but sometimes he's such a *boy* to Caroline, and her occasional jealous re:Matt/Elena wasn't always unfounded. Hmm, though, maybe this will bring in the truth about Vicki when Matt's around?
Ugh, I watched the first half all at once, kept up for a bit, then fell behind and caught up on all the rest of it. Awesome way to watch a show, but I don't have the patience to wait until April or May to do it with this season :p
no subject
But yeah--one of the best things about this show is how great the pacing is. And it's really great.
no subject
And I'm hoping Matt is very there for her, especially over the next several episodes *frets* They're adorable, and I love both of them, but sometimes he's such a *boy* to Caroline, and her occasional jealous re:Matt/Elena wasn't always unfounded.
I am totally in agreement.
Yeah, there's no way I could wait till the end of the season, even though I love to watch it all in one fell swoop. Oh, well! Something to look forward to each week!
no subject
no subject
...Also, I am extremely slow up on the uptake: Sheriff Forbes. Um, they're going to need a rock solid explanation for everything, or things are going to get *very* interesting with Caroline and her mom who knows about vampires (...and then who might find out about Damon?) O_O
no subject
Damn straight. And I adore scenes of Bonnie being badass to Damon, mostly because they are so awesome when acting off of each other.
Katherine is such an awesome bitch. And there's really no other word for her.
I disagree. FABULOUS works pretty damn good, to. FABULOUS, AWESOME BITCH. Nina Dobrev is gonna have some fun scenes to play this season!
I still really can't care about/like Tyler Lockwood. I think it might be the actor? He aggravates me. I really am not excited about him being a bigger character this season.
Okay, you know the dickhead guy in 10 Things I Hate About You? The one that wants to get into the younger sister's pants? That's who Tyler reminds me of, and that's why I'm unimpressed.
EXCUSE ME WHERE IS ALARIC? AND WHY ARE HE AND DAMON NOT BROMANCING IT UP??? Seriously, they better have all kinds of scenes together this season or I'mma be very not pleased.
Opening scene from next episode:
DAMON bangs on ALARIC's door. ALARIC opens it.
DAMON: Bro, I'm totally having an existential crisis and need someone to bounce ideas about life and shit off of.
ALARIC: Life and shit? Well, we better go get us some brewskies over at the Mystic Grill, 'cuz this could get all deep, ya know, bro?
THEY commiserate over life and shit while drinking together
Yes, Lauren. Writing dialogue is hard. See example 'A'.
But I watched episode 2 of Sherlock while getting ready for work today, so all quotas of bromance were filled and any Alaric/Damon would have been bonus.
Poor, poor, poor Damon!
YES!!!! THIS!!!!! OMG, sometimes I wonder if I'm just a big ol' sucker for the underdog. I mean, he got SHUT! DOWN! TWICE! AND THERE'S NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT STEFAN!! I never get these girls - I mean, HELLO, BUFFY! SPIKE DOESN'T NEED GALACTIC ROOFIES TO GET YOU OFF!!! And he totally went down on you without date rape by the universe being involved!
/tangent and way too much dwelling on season 8 sex issues - and not important ones like consent.
I'm actually kind of glad that she's all OMG I HATE DAMON NOW because that means they won't rush the romance. Which was what I was worried about with this season. So now they'll have to really rebuild their relationship in order to get us to believe it, and I approve of that.
ME. TOO. OMG. I expect Stephan will pull an Angel Season 2 and go off the wagon with Katherine somewhere about a third through the season (but with how quickly paced this show is, you really don't know) and Elena will have to mend fences with Damon because he's all she'll have and they will be AWESOME BFFS AGAIN with AMAZING OMG SEXUAL TENSION. And it will be good. (That's my unsubstantiated daydream prediction for the season, btw).
Also, didn't you think the Damon kissing Elena while she says no was like "Seeing Red: the non-squicky and feminist issue-inducing version"? Elena just had so much more agency than Buffy, and it was nice to see her NO be listened to, even if it sent Damon off the deep end.
CAROLINE. I guess this means she'll be a vampire now? An adorable, bubbly vampire? BUT SHE BETTER NOT BE REALLY DEAD. EVER. I LOVE ME SOME CAROLINE TOO MUCH. Also she and Matt remain adorable.
I LOVE CAROLINE TOO! AND BONNIE! AND ELENA!! AND ALL THESE AWESOME GIRLS WHO DON'T PISS ME OFF! I have a substantiated theory about Caroline that I'm DYING to tell you Lauren, but it's such a good and accurate one it almost feels spoilerish. I WANNA TELL YOU SO BAD! *Does Lilly Kane "I got a secret. A good one." impression*
So yes! Over here squeeing about three hours later than you, as per California time. Too tired from work to make my own post, so consider this with such equal authority. And YAY! FALL TV IS BACK!!!!!
no subject
Somehow now that Caroline's a vampire, I'm a thousand times more interested in her. A bubbly vampire would be awesome, since we lost Lexi :(
Alaric will be back, no worries! Avoiding spoiling you but I know he's not gone.
And as much as I ship Damon/Elena and Bonnie/HBIC-ness, I did love the Stefan/Katherine this episode. Oh, baggage, let's put it all on display :D
no subject
So agreed. I was rolling my eyes through all his scenes. And when it was him and Jer? IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO CARE ANY LESS THAN I DO AT THIS VERY MOMENT.
+ I'm actually kind of glad that she's all OMG I HATE DAMON NOW because that means they won't rush the romance. Which was what I was worried about with this season. So now they'll have to really rebuild their relationship in order to get us to believe it, and I approve of that.
Same here! I am really looking forward to them being in conflict and having really tense interactions.
no subject
Exactly! Hee.

+ That said, as bad as I felt for him, that was supremely stupid trying to kill Jeremy. And no, I don't think he saw the ring. But Elena was right: he does want her to hate him so that he can convince himself that he hates himself and he can try to make himself not feel again. I love how she gets him.

Yes, and now she totally hates him for trying to murder her stupid little Brother. Which at least Spike never tried to murder Dawn. And yeah, they do remind me of Spike and Angel.
A very solid episode, I can't wait until next week. It's going to be fun with Katherine now in the mix.
no subject
Do you mean Damon? Because if so yes, I totally want Damon to stake her ass.... at the end of the season. ^_^ And then she and Anna and Lexie can show up in flashbacks.
no subject
That is JUST WHAT I WAS THINKING. Huh.
no subject
I always find him 10000xs more interesting whenever he's being dark.
Word. More bad-ass Stefan pls.
Unless by "supernatural" he meant, "perpetrated by a supernatural being"?
This is my guess. IDK.
Katherine is such an awesome bitch.
I know. I fangirl her.
I still really can't care about/like Tyler Lockwood.
Aww, I care about Tyler. (Which, yes, I am aware I'm in the minority.) I can sympathize with him having to 'mourn' his abusive asshole of a father, whom he was clearly terrified of.
I'm finding myself shipping Stefan/Katherine even more, in a twisted sort of Angel/Darla way.
OK, I was ambivalent before, but after this episode, I am totally with you. They hit all my kinks.
I'm actually kind of glad that she's all OMG I HATE DAMON NOW because that means they won't rush the romance.
Seconded. BRING ON THE BUMPY RIDE.
CAROLINE. I guess this means she'll be a vampire now? An adorable, bubbly vampire?
I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING. Intriguing twist for sure.
I dug this episode a ton. It ripped out my heart and clobbered it thoroughly and now I am bleeding everywhere. That's what I like from my TV. :)

YES about Caroline. :D
And word.

Also, last night I dreamed that Elena and Jeremy had a surprise sister from nowhere that had never been mentioned before, a la Dawn Summers, and who proceeded to fight with Jeremy a great deal about his tendency to do stupid ill-considered things. And she was played by Malese Jow.
I think this is mostly just a sign that I really, really miss Anna.
no subject
But yeah...the supernatural death and the ring was definitely fuzzy...was Elena's adoptive father not wearing his ring when he died? Or maybe he gave it to John? I was confused as well.
Katherine is freaking awesome...I definitely think how well Nina Dobrev plays both her and Elena is what makes the role so much more enjoyable.
I'm not a fan of Bonnie...I don't know why, but I think it's the actress that bugs me.
The Damon and Stefan comparison to Angel and Spike are right on, but without overdoing it and making them carbon copies of one another. *love*
You think Caroline could be the Vampire Diaries version of Harmony? I could picture her being the way Mercedes McNab was on that episode of Supernatural...not aware of what was going on and just completely heartbroken.
