I've never heard of this trope before, but it makes a sick sort of sense, especially when applied to the AR. In fact, I think I'm now enraged for Spike on a whole different level than I was before. Throwing that kind of landmine into his arc was bad enough, but doing it just to manipulate audience sympathy for Buffy? I... have no words.
