just a few things about conclave that made me insane
brought over from tumblr so there's no capitals sorry
1. when they’re doing the final vote and there’s the shot of the pages rustling just the slightest slightest bit and all the cardinals look up and there’s the blown-out windows
like there is so much going on there with both allowing themselves to be affected by the outside world but also with how consistently in scripture the spirit of god is associated with wind (particularly i am thinking of the tiny gentle wind in elijah’s story, but it’s everywhere), like, this is both the influence of the greater world through the actions of people aka the whole reason the windows are blown out in the first place but also it’s the hand of god and like it HAS to be both. i guess you could choose one of those readings over the other but WHY WOULD YOU???
2. everyone shifting languages all the time YES
3. i actually 1000% believe that lawrence thought he didn’t want to be pope but also he DID have the name picked out of course he did
4. the way that we never see all the people standing outside waiting but we hear them when the smoke goes up. like it’s so effective what a good choice.
5. INTERSEX POPE. i was unspoiled for this and i wanted to start screaming. (and honestly i’ve been thinking about how odds are there has been an intersex pope in the past because intersex conditions are just not that rare, only probably no one knew because we didn’t know until fairly recently just how not rare they are because most of them aren’t obviously, but this one KNOWS and that makes a difference!!!)
6. the very last shot of the film is the little novices/acolytes/whatever (i don’t know nun rankings, sorry) laughing together and the door closing behind them!!!!!
This movie feels like a miracle, I mean in the sense that it got made and got made this perfectly. I love adult films about people being people and making choices and interacting. I also love any art that takes religion and faith seriously without either being precious about it or being preachy.
I saw three movies that came out this year: Challengers, Wicked, and Conclave, and they were all a wonderful time in their disparate ways.
