Okay, I have Kindle Unlimited for the moment. While I have it, I'm asking for recommendations for good but obscure speculative fiction writers who might have their stuff on KU. I am positive there are a lot of good authors out there that maybe self-publish but I do not have the time or inclination to go and find them. But if you know them, let me know!

I'm not sure how you'd feel about a few of the character dynamics, but I really enjoyed Skyler Ramirez's The Worst Ship in the Fleet.

Shameless self-rec but I have a book in KU called The Dementia. Here's my post with my AO3-style summary https://tassosss.dreamwidth.org/539785.html.

Unsure if I access the same catalogue here in NZ, but I just downloaded:
Carpathians by Paul Dixon, and
The Night Crossing by Robert Masello.
They both look good, but haven't tried them yet.

And I prev read The Long Game by Anne Leckie (a short fic and nothing like her Ancilliary series but worth a read.)
