Fannish Friday: exchanges

If you were going to design an exchange of any kind (or even another kind of fandom-participation event), what would it be?

I have so many ideas that I will never do anything about because I don't have the time! The dream is a classic film fic exchange--movies made between the dawn of cinema and, like, 1965 or something. I think that would be so cool!

I'd also like to do an exchange for fic about MDZS/CQL women because there's never enough of that! I'd like to do a Robin McKinley-exclusive exchange, but there definitely wouldn't be enough participants for that! There might already be an OT3 exchange out there for all OT3s ever, but if there isn't, there should be! Or a kdrama exchange! Or one for books about girlhood (everything from L.M. Montgomery to Judy Blume!) or (if it doesn't already exist) a female friendship/enemyship (basically anything not-romantic) exchange.

The possibilities are endless, even though the time, unfortunately, is not!

I'd love to hear about the kinds of fandom events you'd organize if you had the time/energy or if the audience for it existed!

Oh, that would be amazing!

As for me, the events I wish existed are something art-related, where the fandoms/prompts are paintings/artworks, and something like [community profile] bethefirst (for fandoms with zero fic), but in exchange or commentfest format. And more commentfests in general! :D

Hi! Here from [personal profile] theseatheseatheopensea.

I love the idea of a female gen relationships exchange, I would be in!

I found out that this year is the 30th anniversary of the first identifiable collection of fannish drabbles, and I thought it would be fun to do a drabble fest for that, but I never actually did anything about it.

In general I always think there should be more drabble fests!

That is the problem, isn't it?

Exchanges are the main fandom thing I haven't run, but I'd definitely have to be magically well for it, which seems very unlikely. I'm lucky these days to be well enough to take part. But otherwise I would LOVE to have a go at one! idk what, I thought of one like the film one, or maybe another historical one (there was one but it only ran for one year).

Some of your more niche ones would be perfectly possibly as a fest of some kind, though, and those take way less time to run! (cf. why I do them and not exchanges, lol)

But I am thinking about doing some other fest again soon. What is the question, there are so many possibilities and I keep not being okay enough to do stuff. I'm very pleased at the moment still with the [community profile] 100ships challenge. I didn't think there were so many multishippers left in the world, but it turns out there are!

I love things like [community profile] no_true_pair and [community profile] intoabar and nowhere outside of LJ/DW do those sorts of things, current fandom is into targeted and not randomising stuff. There should always be more of those!

There used to be a time travel exchange and I'm sad that it seems to be gone. I would love for there to be a replacement, maybe one that includes both time and dimensional travel as I love both and there's a fair amount of overlap? Or maybe some kind of "characters meet other versions of themselves" exchange or fest that incorporates both of those things as well as things like clones, AI duplicates, things like Star Trek-style transporter accidents or whatever the other fandom equivalent of that is. I also just generally wish that more people (or, more specifically, more people in my fandoms) would sign up for the fests that already exist...

I would love a female-character gen exchange too, if you or anyone else ever ran that.

Well, the one I'm running right now! I'm very pleased with [community profile] tolkienekphrasisweek: I like the way I've combined the diversity and low stakes of a "fanweek-style" event with the exciting staggered reveals (and opportunity for better moderation) of Purimgifts. Coming up with the prompts is also always very fun, though definitely time-consuming.

And hey, I think there would be plenty of people who would do a McKinley-only event, if not exchange! Sometimes it seems like everyone on DW has read at least one of her books. And TEW "only" produced 60 works, but it was still really satisfying to see come to fruition.

I used to run an rpf exchange and sometimes I think about restarting it but I don't know that there's really an audience. I definitely don't have the energy.

Newer ideas, space or sci fi themed bingo cards! And a [specific niche-ish kink] themed exchange.

There is a female relationships exchange, but you don't match on relationship type so you have to be comfortable leaving that part to optional details. There's also the gen exchange, maybe?

You can nominate pairings for mdzs/cql women to the mxtx exchange right now! :)
