I will spam y'all some more!

Also, I forgot to include in my rambling earlier Dollhouse post that I was greatly pleased to see Maurissa in the actual episode. She's a cutie and deserves some love!

And now, goodnight. More drabbles tomorrow!

[ETA] Also, lj is being exceptionally stupid in multiple ways right now. *kicks it*

THEY CHANGED THE CREDITS TO REFLECT OTHER PEOPLE BESIDES ELIZA WERE IN THIS SHOW AFTER THEY GOT NEWS OF CANCELLATION?

fail. I WANTED THIS FROM THE PILOT.

NO, NO. It's a fan project! *sigh* But doesn't it look absolutely fabulous? It could be real!

AND YES. I WANTED IT FROM THE PILOT, TOO!

OH DAMMIT. I WAS SO EXCITED.

I'm pretty sure it's just fanmade - it would've been awesome if these had been the actual credits from the start, though. This is such an ensemble show, and the credits + marketing have always been all "LOOK AT ELIZA LOOK AT HER LOOK AT HER SHE IS THE SUN AROUND WHICH THIS PROGRAM ROTATES ECHO IS THE ONLY CHARACTER OF ANY IMPORTANCE WHATSOEVER OMG LOOK AT ELIZA."

(I mean, I am fond of Ms. Dushku but this show is seriously at its best when everyone's a key player. :/)

It's too bad because I tend to think Eliza Dushku is the weakest part of an exceptionally good ensemble.

Whenever I think about how great I thought she was as Faith compared to my "...meh" feelings on her acting here, I think it might be that Eliza isn't bad necessarily, but she's better at playing with drama and more in-your-face characters, instead of something more subdued that relies on a crapload of range instead of one specific characterization. Even when Echo's programmed to be somebody outgoing, she still has that glitchy Echo-ness that necessitates a lot of subtle tics I don't think Eliza has a hold on the way Dichen and Enver do.

[identity profile] oracle42.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think she's best at playing Faith and she seems to default back to Faith anytime she plays an Action!Doll. The safecraker chick (Taffy?) was just Faith with a different skill set.

They've pretty much tried to sell the show as "ELIZA DUSHKU IS NAKED! AND SHOOTING THINGS!" from the beginning, which infuriates me, as it totally undercuts the meaning of the show. *profound sigh*

Exactly. Me, too.

I think there's a painful level of that in the show, too. I don't know if it's an execs-meddling-and-requiring-more-action/sleaze thing or writers-trying-to-please-everyone thing, but I feel like the show wants to be thinky while trying to deliver the naked!Eliza part, too. And it...kinda doesn't work out so well.

I remember reading a review that said an issue with SCC that could explain its tiny, tiny viewership is that it was often too fight scene-oriented to interest the viewers who wanted something intellectual and meaningful, and too plot-twisty, slow-paced, and character-driven for people who wanted an action/adventure show. I really believe the same could be said of Dollhouse, if you threw "sexy hot chicks" into the mix. (I mean, for me SCC > Dollhouse as it is, but I do think they're pretty comparable in that regard.)

I think you're right which is a shame because thinky, plot-twisty, slow-paced, and character-driven with kick-ass fight scenes is my favorite kind of TV. I loved SCC and I kicked myself repeatedly for investing in a Sci-Fi show on Fox when I know better.

So pretty! THAT is how it should have been from the start!
Something like this would have helped dispel preconceived notions that "Dollhouse is just Eliza Dushku soft porn"(yes, someone did say that on IMDB *facepalm*)

I KNOW!

We are so on the same wavelength--I just said something similar upthread. Because that's exactly how they've been selling the show, and I'm positive that thoughtful viewers haven't tuned in because of that and that the people who wanted that started watching and then stopped when they figured out that there was more going on. So they screwed us over multiple ways.

Just so you know, I've been meaning to get around to your Skins reaction posts because they made me flaily with joy. So keep your eyes open. It will happen. It'll be stealth replying!

That’s it, exactly! If you read the one-star imdb reviews, they always have something scathing to say about “Eliza running around scantily clad”. :/ And yes, I’ll just bet those who wanted pure fanservice tuned out as soon as the moral quandaries came up.

I’ll be eagerly anticipating them, then! And, haha, I hope you won’t have too many posts to reply to. Right now, I am sorely tempted to write flaily things everytime I finish an episode—which I am drawing out as much as I can because this is a show to savorrrr. ;)
