Fannish Friday
Early this week, a thought appeared fully-formed in my mind: if
snickfic was in CQL/MDZS fandom, she would have written Jiang Cheng mpreg fic already. And it would be glorious.
I do not know why I had this sudden thought, but I instantly knew the truth of it. And it got me thinking about how sometimes when you're interacting with a piece of media, you just know how a friend would relate to it.
So I pondered this some more and some other ideas came to mind about what would happen if various friends watched k-dramas.
+
dollsome would be delighted by Jun Ji-hyun's characters in things like My Love from the Star and Legend of the Blue Sea and I also think she would be a Kim Seul-gi fan
+
elperian and
sophia_sol would be into the competence and integrity of the characters in Healer and
elperian would be writing fic about Jung-hu and Young-shin taking down governments through the power of journalism and being an outlaw
+ I think
dolorosa_12 would be moved by the family relationships and reflections on growing up and time passing, etc. in the Reply series.
+ And sooo many of y'all would love Ko Moon-young's unhinged energy in It's Okay to Not Be Okay
Do y'all have thoughts like this? Just knowing which of your friends would be into what in fandoms they aren't? Please share!

(Occasionally I wonder what Australian Alex would make of, oh, any number of things, including post-Woollim Infinite and KinnPorsche.)

(I feel that she would be deeply into VegasPete!!!)

:D Tell me which Ninety One member you think I would be most drawn to!
Oooh, tough one, because "drawn to" can mean either "identifies with and wants good things for" or "is intrigued and imaginatively stimulated." For the former I'd go with Alem, as he really does consistently present as just this sweet-hearted person who wants everyone to be happy (especially his wife). But for the latter I'd go with Bala, just because maknae-on-top, and while the genderfuckery element is not there in this slightest in this case you have the common theme of having Been Through It in the idol industry at a young age, and now having to combine ambition with compensating for your hyungs' collective lack of common sense.

Agreed!
I love your thoughts! Thank you for sharing them!

There are a lot of books that I think particular Dreamwidth friends would enjoy, but I'm not sure anyone would become really fannish about them. (And sometimes I'm proved right, like with you and Juniper and Wise Child!)

I've always been daunted by k-dramas due to the length (long episodes, and often what seem to be relatively long series)
This is definitely understandable. I do have recs for some shorter ones if you're ever interested. But the Reply series (well, Reply 1997 and Reply 1988--the 1994 one is not a favorite of mine) are absolutely lovely but they do have very long episodes and frankly should have been edited quite a bit. It was worth it to me because I love the characters and the vibe so much, but it's definitely an investment of time.

Book recs are a love language! I am so grateful that you and several others encouraged me to read those two!

But I think she would really enjoy something like The devil Judge or Beyond Evil, and she'd gravitate to characters like Jin Guangyao and Xue Yang in CQL; I can especially see her loving Xue Yang because she enjoys these kinds of unhinged characters a lot! XD
Most of my other RL friends aren't fannish about media, so I can't see them really getting into it at all, unfortunately. It would be sooo nice! T_T And the online friends I have now are almost all into Asian dramas too. XD
There is a friend I've got from my PotC days; she might enjoy the gentle, fun rlationship dramas - like recently new Life Begins. I haven't seen it but it sounds like a very positive, fun show and I think she might enjoy that one.

Aww, that's so nice!

mostly, tbh, it only occurs to me to think about what a friend would be into if they request recommendations from me! someone says "give me a book to read" and I'm scrolling through all my reviews being like "HMMM WHICH WOULD SPEAK TO THEM"

Definitely! Healer is SO good!
"give me a book to read" and I'm scrolling through all my reviews being like "HMMM WHICH WOULD SPEAK TO THEM"
As I said upthread, I truly believe that book recommendations are their own love language!

I will have to think about this for my friends and fandoms. š¤

So true! And to be fair, you'd probably have written Wangxian mpreg, too (though which one you would have chosen to be pregnant is not something I can predict), but I just feel strongly that you would take one look at Jiang Cheng and be like, "That one. That's a dude that needs to be knocked up." And he does! He so so does! He needs a daughter!

Occasionally, yes - or which fandoms they might like, more usually. But sometimes, if they were in this one - which they aren't and won't - they would like THIS bit/pairing/character.
Sometimes just wishing they would be because the fic would, indeed, be glorious and it would be awesome. /vaguely handwaves away people's own dear obsessions in favour of mine obv. heh.

I feel the exact same way! <3

I mean, I also think, x would like y... but I usually say that. Except when it is an old Brit TV thing and I am not at all sure the other person would (entirely sensibly) be into that.

Indeed! I think about this a lot!

For some reason I always feel like you would really like Severance. I have no idea if that's a correct read at all, but there's just something about its vibe that matches you in my brain! Maybe your love of old school Black Mirror? (Did you used to love Black Mirror or am I totally bonkers? I feel like you're the person I heard about the original first few seasons from but it's been so long!)

I have meant to watch Severance! There's always so much TV to watch! Knowing that you think I'd like it does make me want to bump it higher on my list, though. (And yes, old school Black Mirror was my jam!)

On the flipside, I have other fandom friends whose tastes are polar opposite to mine to the point where I can easily predict if they will like something just based on how much I hate it lmao. For example, when one of them started reading "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet" by Becky Chambers, I knew with complete certainty that she was going to love it, only because of how much of an anti-rec it is for me XD

I love that!

Lol, I love this even more!

*fans eyes* I'm not tearing up with how happy this makes me, THIS IS FINE -
(Where can I watch this??? I haven't had much energy for subtitled movies recently, but for a tv show it's in shorter sprints!)

I'm so happy to make you happy! I really do think you'd enjoy it!
I am SO annoyed that you'd have to have a Viki Pass to watch it on Viki. You can get a free 7-day trial but you'd never be able to finish 20 episodes in that time. How do you feel about less legal means?
