poking my head in just long enough to say...
Okay, so I don't anticipating in participating much on the new platforms* that are being floated (Cohost because of the lag and clunk, Mastadon because it's frankly way too much like Twitter) but I went ahead and made accounts just in case.
You can find me here on Mastadon and here on Cohost, and if you have accounts of your own, please do add me. (And then tell me who you are if your username isn't immediately recognizable.)
*Cohost lags like crazy--and as of right now, I literally can't get my page to load--and seems fairly clunky, though hopefully those things will be sorted out. Mastadon, otoh, is way too much like Twitter with a slightly longer wordcount. It doesn't look conducive to actual discussion at all, but maybe it will surprise me.

As far as I can tell it's made to be like Twitter, but trying to get rid of all the biggest problems?

And Twitter/Mastodon (as micro-blogging sites) are different to places where you can have long indepth conversations. But I found Twitter v useful for just keeping tabs on... politics and lgbt+ issues and culture and things I would otherwise never really come into contact with. A slice of the world in tiny bite sized chunks. And with wonderful & supportive communities, as well as experts on anything and everything weighing in on whatever issues were currently happening. Twitter was also a hellscape full of gremlins, and so far Mastodon feels much more quiet and 'safe' (for lack of a better word). It's so much better moderated - there are not endless trolls and right wing bigots jumping into every thread. You can just read and one day I might stop lurking and talk to people (something I never ever did on Twitter - it was not a social place for me).
/random, in case you were wondering

I'm glad!
Yeah, I'm glad that Mastodon exists and I'm really hopeful it'll be all the good parts of Twitter without the bad ones.
