Can you believe Stephenie Meyer has run out of money already???? Her accountant must be embezzling from her or something, because she should have had more than enough to last several lifetimes. But I can think of no other explanation for why she's doing this now.

I find myself missing my "Twilights means never having to say you're kidding" icon.

Oh, well. At least the memes will be fun.

Oooh. OK, that made me run down memory lane of LJ posts past...

cleolinda (the hero we deserved) did a commentary way back when the first chapters were leaked:

Oh man, it's not even a new book as such, it's a retelling of the same story from the sparkly vampire's point of view?? Ha!

(Maybe she thinks that, now that enough time has gone by since the "50 shades of grey" books have been released, her own book might have a better chance?)

Is it weird that I feel sort of happy she's doing it specifically because I'm SO annoyed that SMeyer canceled Midnight Sun but then E.L. James copied Midnight Sun to write the Christian Grey version and surely made millions of dollars from it? Like, TAKE BACK WHAT'S YOURS, SMEYER!!!! It may be garbage, but it's your garbage by right!! Make that money!! If, that is, anyone's willing to read about Edward Cullen's creepy thoughts in the year 2020.

(SMeyer kinda won some small part of my soul for life by making the Austenland movie happen with her production company.)

I know you're joking, but (1) if she did seriously tithe 10% a year, that + taxes + agent fees would've eaten up a good chunk and (2) agent/publisher fraud is apparently not all that uncommon, from what I've read in Kris Rusch's columns.

I don't think she's broke, I think she's bored. As are we all! I applaud her for providing us with this quarantine entertainment!

What I'm most interested in is if she's changed/improved as a writer in the 12 years since she wrote the original draft? Or if she just dumped the same manuscript that she wrote back then. Imagine the reaction if it turned out that she'd spent the last few years honing her craft and the sequel to be a genuinely well-written book :D

I wonder if when all this started, she saw an article on the Spanish flu and went, "Oh, yeah, I made up a character who died of that once..." and went back and read her own work and was like, "Hey, I could publish this." Because that's how it would have gone down with a fanfic writer!

I actually really agree with you. It would be fascinating if she's really improved a lot since then and I honestly hope she has! But I suspect the book will just be the version that was written years ago.

Isn't this just gonna be that "You" book with the Netflix adaptation starring Dan from Gossip Girl? :p
