Kpop Girl Group/Female Soloists Recs
I wrote this for one person in particular, but I'm posting it here because it seems a waste not to share it on the off chance that anyone is interested in checking out some Kpop but doesn't know where to start.
Retired Groups/Soloists
Still Active Groups/Female Soloists
Retired Groups/Soloists
- f(x) - Forever Fave. Their two albums Pink Tape and Red Light are both flawless and I listen to them constantly. ("nu ABO," "Rum Pum Pum Pum," "4 Walls," "Jet")
- Spica - My favorite underrated group. Incredible singers who never got what they deserved. ("Tonight," "You Don't Love Me," "I'll Be There," or check out their performances on Immortal Song 2)
- 9Muses - Another group that’s underrated. Their lineup was always changing but they put out some great songs, especially in 2013 ("Wild," "Dolls," "Hurt Locker," "Gun").
- Sistar - They had more sexy concepts, but my favorite stuff from them is their summer bops ("Shake It," "Loving U," "Touch My Body")
- SNSD - I've never really been into them, but I can't deny that no other girl group has ever been bigger and they do have some really good songs. ("Genie," "Hoot," "Into the New World," "Run Devil Run")
- Wonder Girls - After SNSD, probably the most popular girl group of the 2nd generation. they started out doing retro type concepts and ended up literally being a band. ("Tell Me," "Nobody," "I Feel You," "Why So Lonely?")
- Miss A - Their output was surprisingly small, but all of it was quality ("Good Girl, Bad Girl," "Goodbye Baby," "I Don't Need a Man," "Hush")
- 4minute - Their music wasn’t really my thing, but a lot of people LOVE them. (my favorite is "Hate" but lots of people dislike it. "Crazy," "Volume Up," "I My Me Mine")
- Orange Caramel - For when you want straight-up weird but in a candy-sweet kind of way ("Catallena," "Lipstick," "Bangkok City").
- EXID - I would love to hang out with EXID. Wikipedia is telling me their style is "trip hop" so make of that what you will. ("Up and Down," "Hot Pink," "Lady")
- Crayon Pop - One-hit wonders? I loved them before they were famous! It's less about the music than about the fact that they're unlike any other group ever. ("Bar Bar Bar," "Bing Bing," "Dancing Queen")
- Lee Hyori - Maybe not retired? I'm not sure what her deal is right now. Started out as a girl group member in a 1st gen group, became a huge solo star. Wouldn't be surprised if she comes back. ("Miss Korea," "U-Go-Girl," "Bad Girls," "10 Minutes")
Still Active Groups/Female Soloists
- Brown Eyed Girls - All of their stuff is incredible and they just had a comeback! ("Abracadabra," "L.O.V.E.," "Lovemotion," "Sixth Sense," "Kill Bill," it's literally all good).
- Dreamcatcher - My current favorite girls. They have a unique rock sound and darker concepts (witches! vampires! some kind of weird ritual!). They always sing live and their choreo is the best. Just flat-out great performers. ("You and I," "What," "Piri," "Deja Vu")
- Mamamoo - Second best singers in kpop (after BEG). I prefer their earlier stuff, but they always impress. ("Piano Man," "You're the Best," "Décalcomanie," "Starry Night")
- Loona - their fandom is INTENSE, but just watch the "Butterfly" dance and see how good they are ("Butterfly," "Favorite," and all of the members have their own individual stuff like Yves's "New" and Chuu's "Heart Attack")
- (G)Idle - Their leader writes most of their songs (and some for other groups) and they are all incredibly compelling performers. They're newish, I love their energy. ("Latata," "Hann," "Uh-oh")
- Oh My Girl - They are the very, very best at cute. Accept no substitutes. Their music gets described as "fairy popo" a lot, which I think is fair. ("Closer," "Windy Day," "Bungee," "Liar Liar")
- Red Velvet - Their music is all over the place, but that means there’s something for everyone. ("Peekaboo," "Happiness," "Red Flavor," "Bad Boy")
- Twice - The biggest girl group in kpop right now. I like them even though their music isn't really my favorite. ("Heartshaker," "TT," "What Is Love," "Signal")
- CLC- Been working hard for a long time and are finally getting their dude this year. ("No," "Devil")
- Ladies' Code - The fact that they're still going after losing two members in a car accident blows my mind. Main vocalist Sojung is a favorite of mine (check out her solo stuff!). ("Pretty Pretty," "Galaxy," "Bad Girl," "Hate You"
- APink - One of the few 2nd gen groups still around. They started out with a cute concept but have recently shifted to something more mature. ("Mr Chu," "My My," "I'm So Sick")
- Sunmi - Former member of Wonder Girls, probably the most interesting solo singer in kpop right now ("Gashina," "Noir," "Lalalay")
- IU - For a more indie sound. She's a singer/songwriter, incredibly versatile. ("The Red Shoes," "Twenty-three," Palette")
- Lim Kim - I've been following her for years, but she disappeared for a while and then came back with a completely different sound. I don't like this new sound very much, but I'm still rooting for her and her older stuff remains among my favorite. ("Goodbye 20," "Awoo," "Alright," and for her new stuff, try, "Yellow")
- Ailee - Again, don't love her stuff lately as much as the earlier stuff, but what a voice! She's delightful. ("I Will Show You," "Don't Touch Me," "Heaven")
- BoA - The undisputed Queen of Kpop and the biggest soloist of the 1st generation. Of course she's still going strong. ("Atlantis Princess," "No 1," "Hurricane Venus")
- Hyuna - Former member of 4minute, a big solo star. She's ridiculously oversexualized by everyone around her, but she's wonderful and adorable and I love her. ("Bubble Pop," "Red," "Lip & Hip")
- Yubin - Another former member of Wonder Girls, doing underrated stuff. ("Thank U Soooo Much," "Lady")
- Taeyeon - Former? member of SNSD and a huge star. ("Something New," "Spark," "I," "Fine")

(and Piano Man)
*cough* this is actually a good list. I would add:
* Lim Kim -- I am personally not a big fan of her new sound but other people will be
* Yubin -- the other Wonder Girls alum whose solo tracks I'm following, her newest features Yoon Mi Rae
* Saturday -- I am reluctant to recommend any new girl group rn in the absence of evidence that they're being treated anywhere close to well, but this one has shed members like flies, which suggests that the members who aren't comfortable at least have a chance to leave. (finding hope in the dung, that's me) anyway, this is the current lineup. they're cute.
* Taeyeon -- "Something New" broke my fucking heart but "Spark" is good too
* Hyuna is now vlogging and both she and Hyojung/DAWN are dropping albums next Tuesday
* might as well mention Sera's vlogs while I'm at it, though I think she's moving to a new channel
* Ailee has not done anything I've loved in a while -- her last was too on-trend for me to really enjoy -- but still, Ailee
* I cannot tell you a damn thing about the company behind HINAPIA but the group, which is brand new, includes four former members of Pristin, so I'm rooting for it
* WAIT YOU ALSO FORGOT LADIES CODE AND LOOK AT WHAT SOJUNG JUST DID
* AND YOU ALSO FORGOT APINK????!?

I also do not like Lim Kim's new sound, but I hope she's successful. I'm glad she's doing what she wants to do, even if I don't enjoy listening to it.
Yubin is doing some great things! I listen to "Thank u sooo much" all the time!
I know literally nothing about Saturday, but I will look into them. I just watched the new HINAPIA performance and thought the song was good and they had stage presence, so hopefully the group is more successful. Pristin was such a waste.
I do like Ladies' Code, but honestly I love Sojung's solo stuff more? I will definitely check out that performance I bet she rocked it!
(Confession: I was never really into APink????)

eta: and yes, "Thank U Soooo Much" deserves more attention than it initially got

Also, I am glad you still love "Piano Man" as much as I do! I feel like Mamamoo's early stuff has been forgotten, but I love it best.
