...I don't know. I think people might be generalizing their own experience?

I mean, 15 years ago, I was 12. Of course I didn't hear the term "slut-shaming". I wasn't engaged in any feminist discourse, nor was I in an environment that encouraged such discourse. Now I am, because I'm smack dab in the middle of some feminist LJ stuff.

I don't doubt it's become more common in the mainstream, but...I feel weird saying that because the term wasn't in such use outside of feminist circles that the average person-on-the-street wouldn't be aware that they concept is wonky. Again, this wasn't the 50s. It's not some bygone era. Things were different ~10 years ago, but not that difference.

Honestly, I think the main change is the proliferation of the internet and the exchange of ideas therein. And that mostly affects people who use the internet a lot and are in the 'right' places on the internet. People who hang out on, I dunno, 4chan and such probably wouldn't be as cognizant of some big sweeping social change as people here seem to be.

I'm rambling. Basically, I think people are prone to generalizing personal experiences, and that that can lead to some misleading perceptions.

Now, I really have to go.
