I think you're absolutely right. smart as she is, I don't think she knows how to be happy. That's probably the best description of her that I've ever heard. And I can so easily see them continuing to act out these roles because, on the one hand, they understand each other better than anyone else ever could, and, on the other, they bring out all the worst in each other.
