Rare Women Dear Author Letter
I'm basically revamping my past Yuletide letters, so hopefully this will make sense.
Hello, wonderful person who is assigned to write me a Yuletide fic! Thanks in advance for the story! I truly hope you have a great time writing it.
The first thing that needs to be said is that these thoughts are here to help you, especially in helping you generate ideas. Feel free to ignore any of them that don't aid you. Please don't feel pressure to stick to anything specific here. I want this to be a happy experience for you, not one that stresses you out.
That said, some things: I prefer het or gen, and I think this particular challenge is an awesome one to focus on gen fic or even character study. I hate character-bashing. I'm squicked by any kind of lady-bashing, racism, etc. (unless you're exploring how problematic those things are) and also by cheating/adultery, so please try to steer away from those.
My absolute favorite thing in the world is strong characterization. I’m open on what kind of situations you put the characters in, so long as they’re true to themselves. I like plotty stuff and character studies, beautiful prose, witty or realistic dialogue, and experimental stuff--basically I'll follow you anywhere as long as the characters are real. If you keep that in mind, I have no doubt that you'll produce something I'll love.
I'm not a fan of too much smut--exploring sex or how it affects a relationship is fine with me for any of the fandoms where I requested something het, but please focus on the emotions, not the explicit physicality. And if you do go the romance direction, know that what I love most of all is people showing love in ways other than the words "I love you."
And, of course, any combination of any of the ladies listed below would be amazing. You can pick just one to focus on, or pick several and have them meeting up, whatever. I love them all.
Doctor Who
Liz X, Lorna Bucket, Rita (from The God Complex), Sally Sparrow
Some thoughts, in order of lady-preference:
- Sally. Like I said, I ship Sally/Billy Shipton like burning. However! That doesn't mean that the fic needs to include that pairing (though if it did, I'd probably die of excitement). Just that I prefer it not to focus a whole lot on Sally/Larry, though if you want to mention it, that's cool. Other than that, I will just appreciate anything about Sally. I will say that I'd probably like to see something that happens after her introduction to the wider world of space/time travel, etc. and not something that takes place before "Blink." Some ideas: Sally as the Doctor's companion (any of the Doctors 9-11; I haven't watched old!Who so I don't know them), Sally meeting up with another one of the (new!Who) companions, Sally saving the world, Sally communicating with Kathy across the years, etc.
- Rita. I love Rita: her sense of humor, her level head, her faith. I'm really open to anything involving her, and I'll be especially pleased if the fic involves an exploration of her faith. An AU where she survives would be especially lovely, and I love the idea of her becoming a companion, too. Or, as with Sally, her meeting one (or more) of the other companions.
- Liz X. Well, she's the bloody queen. Anything at all involving her would be lovely, with bonus points if she and River run into each other again.
- Loran Bucket. A fic about the time she met the Doctor or an AU where she lives and gets to see more of the universe would be lovely, as would anything that has her interacting with one of the Ponds (or any of the other companions).
Designing Women
Julia Sugarbaker, Suzanne Sugarbaker, Mary Jo Shively, Charlene Frazier, Bernice Clifton
I love this cast. Love it. I love Julia’s fierce monologues and Mary Jo’s good humor and sense and Suzanne’s clueless self-involvement and Charlene’s sweet dimness. Basically, it’s a love fest. I’m totally easy on whichever characters you want to use. Banter and wit and unadultered Southerness and feminism are all most welcome. I don’t have a lot of guidelines for this one, actually, because everything about it is just so enjoyable. So let your mind run wild, because these characters being themselves in the same room will always result in delightfulness. And having more than one lady from this show interacting with each other would be ideal, though you can do a one-character focused-story if that's what appeals to you.
Press Gang
Lynda Day, Sam Black, Tiddler
As far as shipping goes, I prefer Lynda/Spike and Sam/Kenny BUT! I am all about the gen in this fandom, and I’m totally fine with any of the not-listed characters showing up. A fic where Lynda and Sam are interacting in some way would be my dream-fic; I love the contrast between them, because they're both strong women but in completely different ways. I'd prefer a fic that focused either on Lynda or Sam as opposed to Tiddler, but if you really want to write Tiddler-centric fic, that's fine, too.
Feel free to bring in any other characters from any of these fandoms. I'm fine with pretty much any genre, though a tone/mood that matches that of the original text is ideal. Preferrably no crack unless it's the apocalypse--I do love post-apocalyptic fic. Please no character bashing of any characters at all.
For some lengthy and much more specific insights into things that really do it for me in fic and things that don't, you can head over here to this mess of a post.
I hope this post is helpful to you, and again, I hope you have fun writing your fic! Thanks for writing for me and for having great taste in fandoms. Happy writing!
