Yeah, he definitely was lacking in the characterization in the first season. Just...so one-dimensional. He was straight-up hateful, but we didn't get any reason for it. As sad as I was when that poor sweet soldier killed himself, I think last night signaled that maybe they're actually going to give Thomas some depth now, and I am SUPER EXCITED.
YES! Mary's mellowing out a ton this season, too. The way she's treated Lavinia so politely? I don't think she would have done that at the beginning of last season.
