Yeah, I hated him when I watched S1 for the first time- I think I tagged a gif of him "I hope the Germans shoot you," heh- but afterwards I looked back and went "wait . . . how is this characterization?" Like, at least when Mary and Edith are nasty, there's reasoning behind it. And the more I thought about his role in the story and the evil gay smoking of evil gay cigarettes and the lack of depth the angrier I got until yesterday's episde rolled around and I was about ready to catch a plane to Britain and egg Julian Fellowes' house. (And then the actual episode happened, and . . . yeah.)

Oh! You know what my favourite part of last night's ep was? When Edith got the news that she wasn't wanted back at the farm, and Mary actually looked concerned for her. They've done so much awful stuff to each other, I really want them to finally bond now that the war's on. Come on, show! You owe me.
