It's the reason that many of the English teachers I had would give us essay questions somewhere along the lines of "write a sequel to ____" or "write a conversation between characters A, B, and C" or "write a scene from ____ from the perspective of a different character." It's because it works. It really does let you interact with the text in a way that nothing else does.
