lirazel: An outdoor scene from the film Picnic at Hanging Rock ([ats] shanshu)
lirazel ([personal profile] lirazel) wrote2010-03-30 09:42 am

Look! I made a poll!

1. Gah! I got up and read through my post from last night, and there was grammar!fail everywhere! So many wrong words! Why didn't y'all tell me? I'm so embarrassed!

But I seriously blame it on how hopped-up on upset-ness I was because of the race!fail argument (wow. Awkward syntax much?). My apologies.

2. [livejournal.com profile] angearia has obliged me, as she is wont to do because she is wonderful, and written me Buffy and Spike ice skating fic! The Cutting Edge references! Flashbacks to Fanged Four days! Flirty adorableness! A title from a Frost poem! Greek mythology references! General sweetness! Go forth and read!

3. I was surprised and delighted by all the Angel/Darla love in the thread last night. DARLA DARLA DARLA. It inspired me to do a poll!

The first question is just about Angel's canon relationships (and no, Spangel shippers, "one time" doesn't count as canon--sex only counts as a relationship if you do it often enough ;D), and you can only pick one. With the second: go wild!

One caveat on that one, though: I think a lot of us are of the opinion that just about any pairing can work of the author is extraordinary. But this isn't a crack!pairing-that-might-work-under-the-right-circumstances questions. It's more a, "Can you imagine various scenarios in which a variety of various decent writers could make this work?" Or, alternately: "Pretend these people are real. Which one would really work?"

And the final question is just me being silly.

[Poll #1545059]

Haha, I must have missed the grammar!fail. Or else I just thought you were trying to make some sort of hilarious point like you're so excited you can't even ABIDE PROPER GRAMMAR.

obliged me, as she is wont to do because she is wonderful

Tis 'cause I ♥ Lauren!

And why are you so funny! Why are all these choices so funny! You're so happy today! *hugs* It's making me happy 'cause the joy is infectious!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you missed it, but trust: it was there. The one that really made me wince was when I said I can "figure" Angel instead of "forgive." *headdesk*

But I kind of love the idea of me trying to make a point through BAD GRAMMAR.

I ♥ you more!

I don't know! Where is this stuff coming from? I couldn't tell you? But I am super hyper today, and I'll probably get annoying soon, so feel free to smack me around! *hugs* Yay for all of us being happy!

And tell me you appreciated my V/L quote used in the context of A/D.

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know! Where is this stuff coming from? I'd like to believe it's the skating fic that made you happy! Aaaaaaaaaand now that's canon. Go me!

V/L quote FTW. YES. JUST YES.

(Confession: I feel like the odd one out because while in theory I understand the appeal of Angel/Darla, I, uh, don't get it. Like at all. I don't think I can get any sort of Angel/relationship. The only one I ever enjoyed was Buffy/Angel, but that was back when I was like young and stupid or something. So I've historically enjoyed Buffy/Angel and can see the appeal, but that's only because Buffy is my girlfriend and I'm all for her. So when she's feeling smiley, I'm all yay Buffy! But when it comes to Angel/Anyone I just don't get it. ANGEL IS A EUNUCH, OKAY?)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
THAT IS SO CANON!

(Hey, I've never understood the appeal of, say, Wes. So I totally get your feeling odd-man-out. Admittedly, I've only seen AtS one time, but everything just seemed to come to life when Darla was around, especially Angel. Which appealed to me. Who knows how I'd feel this time through?

Buffy is my girlfriend, too! So yeah: if I really thought he could make Buffy happy, I'd (grudgingly) be okay with it. I just really don't think he would. Regardless: YAY BUFFY!

And I don't have any desire to think about Angel having sex. EUNUCH INDEED. I just prefer his interactions--romantic/sexual or otherwise--with Darla and Cordy than with anyone else.)

[identity profile] eilowyn.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)

Inserting Wedding Singer quotage when appropriate is appropriate.

no, seriously. I've always used this quote to talk about Angel's love life. If he never has sex, his martyr syndrome is totally amped to +1000000! It's a good thing!

It's *glorious*.

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
See, that's what I mean. I see why others think it's awesome (and I can analyze it and see how it's awesome), but I don't have an emotional investment.

*pouts*

Maybe I should try rewatching AtS again and specifically work on the Angel/Darla'ing.

[identity profile] dee81.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't even notice the grammar....I think I was just too giddy reading a post about Angel's love life :D I love your posts. They're so entertaining!

The first question I kept going back and forth between Darla and Cordelia. In the end, Darla won out because they were actually an awesome couple. Also, he brought out the love that she had inside (okay that sounded so cheesy, but you get my drift). And she made Angel more exciting, in evil ways and in good ones.

I'm getting all nostalgic now. I may have to pop in a few Season 2 and 3 DVDs to get my Darla/Angel fix.

Cordelia and Angel never got to the relationship point and I'm honestly still bitter about that. I choked up at the end of You're Welcome, not only because Cordelia was dead, but because Angel and Cordy never got their full chance. Sad. What a waste of love and hotness.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw! You're way too kind! I'm glad you were enjoying yourself!

Your thought process very much reflects my own. I agree with just about everything!

[identity profile] anythingbutgrey.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHA I CANNOT ANSWER THIS POLL because angel/cordy, as mentioned, was executed poorly, and buffy/angel is the only angel ship that makes sense to me but also doesn't make sense to me from a buffy perspective, and so i'm just like idk can't we talk about someone else?

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHA, my reaction EXACTLY.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. LET'S TALK ABOUT LILAH. BAD. ASS.

Oh, Lilah. You were so, so, so awesome. With great shoes! Even Cordy thought so!

[identity profile] anythingbutgrey.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
LILAH WAS PERFECT. A PERFECTLY BUILT CHARACTER, PERFECTLY DEVELOPED, HORRIBLY MISSED.

FUCK YOU, JOSS.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
AMEN!

[identity profile] author-by-night.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Cordelia all the way. As I said in the other post, I didn't mind Buffy/Angel, but I never saw it working, whereas I actually wish Joss had given Cordy and Angel at least one day of couple's bliss.

I can also see Faith, just because I felt like two times when she needed someone, he was the one who came through, or tried at least. The only thing is that it would be weird if he dated yet another slayer, especially one his ex was friends with. (Then again, Buffy and Cordy were kind of friends, but... nothing like Buffy and Faith were. I think they mostly just tolerated each other for Xander's sake and because they were saving the world together.)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I would have loved for Angel and Cordy to have happened--not as some big, epic love, but as two friends who realize that they could be really good for each other.

Well, in my head!canon, Buffy and Spike are already together, which makes Angel like her brother-in-law already. And since Faith is like her sister (I'm kind of hung up on this whole sibling thing, did you notice?), it just solidifies the whole brother-in-law thing. Yeah, it'd be a bit weird at first, but I think Bufy'd get over it.

they mostly just tolerated each other for Xander's sake and because they were saving the world together Agreed.

[identity profile] shipperx.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I really debated on Angel/Faith for a while because I loved their dynamic. Ultimately, though, I think I decided I preferred them as friends. No problem seeing them as friends with benefits, though. :)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not one of those people who thinks that people with great dynamics always need to hook up--so yeah, I have no problem on viewing them as friends. I just think that under certain circumstances they could be great for each other. Or friends with benefits, if you want to do that. ;)

From what we got on screen, I enjoyed his relationship with Darla most. However, I would pair him up with Cordy. Unless Angel is soulless, I don't see him having a functional relationship with Darla.

I chose Angel/Darla because it's what works best for me in canon. He's evil, she's evil, they do evil things together. For me, it just works. But I don't care one whit.

I'd really have loved for Cordy/Angel to have worked, though. It's a shame they screwed that one up so badly because I really think it could have made me actually like Angel. Most of my favorite Angel moments have to do with him being dorky, and I think Cordy could have brought that out in him. (Of course, I mostly contribute Angel's dorkiness to DB. I don't think the writers or Joss even think of it as a character trait for him. The Manilow thing feels more like a dig at the character than a truly dorky trait of his.)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, sometimes you say things, and I think, "She can seriously read my mind." Because every word that you write is just exactly how I feel. YES. To all of this!

Nina. Not just because there's a werewolf called Nina in Being Human, but because the relationship was just starting, had potential, AND PROVES BEYOND ALL POSSIBLE DOUBT JUST HOW FAR ANGEL HAD MOVED ON FROM BUFFY!!!!!

Er ... sorry about the shoutyness - but some points are important!

[identity profile] riccadonna.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
(...or maybe, because Nina fits perfectly the trend of young-blond-little-thing that works so well for Angel...while showing at the same time that Buffy was just another notch in that particular belt...)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
OH YES.

This is how I've always seen it.

He's trying to replace Darla!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNEW I FORGOT SOMEONE!

Sorry!

Haha! When Annie said, "There's a Nina the werewolf on Buffy," I said--out loud to the TV screen--"Nuh-uh, Annie. She's on Angel!"

That point is important! And we embrace the capitalization around here!
Edited 2010-03-30 17:39 (UTC)

[identity profile] shipperx.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh! I sort of loved Annie pointing out to Being Human's Nina that there had also been a werewolf named Nina in the Whedonverse (and admitted she'd been a fan... until she'd started actually living it. :)
gillo: (Being Human)

[personal profile] gillo 2010-03-30 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved that too. Toby Whithouse says he's never seen any Buffy or Angel, which is why he got the show wrong, but somebody on the production team sure as hell had!

[identity profile] pennydrdful.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
What, no Nina on the list? I will say that she was an alright gal, but not as Angel's one twu luv. Nina + Angel = Oh so boring.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I seriously forgot about her. And I was thinking as I wrote this up, "Who am I missing?" And it was Nina. She should be there in both questions, shouldn't she?

*sigh*

I'm trying to figure out who that is in your icon....

[identity profile] pennydrdful.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)

The answers to third question are a clear demonstration that we love ticky boxes.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That's definitely what I've learned from this highly scientific study, yes. *nods*

[identity profile] slaymesoftly.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't notice any grammar!fail. Probably because the whole thing was so enthusiastic and interesting. :)

I was torn between Darla and Cordy above. I went with Cordy, but it could have gone either way. Make him Angelus, and there's no question.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
This is such a relief to me! Trust me, it was there! But I'm really glad you enjoyed it so much!

I understand. I picked Darla because they were most interesting together canon-wise, but he and Cordy had so much potential. So much. It makes me sad to know that that'll never happen.

[identity profile] rebcake.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I was tempted to pair Angel with Wes, but seriously, hasn't poor Wes suffered enough?

Yeah, I really don't enjoy Angel having a good time. At all. What I really dislike is him getting all dominant in the sack. So: Darla, Faith, or Cordy. 'Cause they'd slap him down. I guess Illyria would be okay, but if she wants Spike, she should have him.

P.S. Tiny grammar!fail in the Emmie thank you. ITYSK. Heh.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! I don't even like Wes very much, but even he doesn't deserve to be put through something like that!

What I really dislike is him getting all dominant in the sack. So: Darla, Faith, or Cordy. 'Cause they'd slap him down. OH YES. Those were my picks, for exactly that reason. Angel needs someone who will play that role. Absolutely.

What is it? I just glanced through again and couldn't figure it out? Have my English major glasses failed me?

BTW: I love your little punny thing there!

[identity profile] rebcake.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh, no fail but mine! I should've re-read before saying anything. I was being hyper vigilant...but also hyper wrong.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Nah, that's cool! I just couldn't figure out what it was, and I was at a loss!

[identity profile] shipperx.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I love both Angel/Darla and Angel/Cordy... but in entirely different ways.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Angel/Darla for what they were and Angel/Cordy for what they could have been.

But yeah: I like them both!

[identity profile] mabus101.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't actually think of Buffy and Angel as soulmates (though they could be destined for each other--destiny isn't necessarily a good thing), but they have an interesting relationship dynamic that I like to watch sometimes. (Thus the Darla answer in the first question.)

I haven't really known you long enough to be shocked by anything you say....

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Great observation (Macbeth could tell you as much!). I would love to read a fic in which Buffy and Angel are soulmates, destined to be together through all eternity, and it's a horrible thing and they hate it.

B/A is actual the kind of dynamic I'm guaranteed to be least interested in, so whenever they're together I get bored. But I can see why it appeals to other people.

Yeah, that last question doesn't work for everybody. But I hope you enjoyed the TICKY answer!

[identity profile] mabus101.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a scene planned in DeadWar which an OC connected with (but not working for) Wolfram & Hart tells Angel that yes, he and Buffy are destined to be together...and that he ought to screw destiny, because it's a bad thing.

I've also already written the scenes where she gets him to admit that he and Darla were in love. *sniffle*

Well, you might get your wish if the comics go that route. Personally, it's the only result I can see that's palatable, but what I want rarely equals what happens in the comics.

[identity profile] crackers4jenn.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I 'ship the crap out of Wes/Angel, because: GOD. Their whole relationship! I'm not even talking sexy times, I'm just saying. The two of them together and all of their ~issues~ is one of my favorite things about the show. (That last look they exchange in Not Fade Away kills me EVERY TIME. And Wes kidnapping Connor! Angel suffocating Wes! Ah!)

Romantically speaking, I love Cordy for Angel. Which makes me sad, because (aside from You're Welcome in season 5) they were so poorly executed! Like Gunn/Fred. Why go through all the trouble of setting up FEELINGS between them if all it ever amounted to was NOTHING?

[identity profile] gabrielleabelle.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 12:42 am (UTC)(link)

Angel/Darla. Spanning years and continents. Lives ruined, blood shed. Epic

YOU WIN AT LIFE.

The rampant D/A loving going on hereabouts MAKES MY LIFE. They're winning the poll, people!! LOOK AND WEEP. (Yes I am in Mood: Hyper. Cheers, Lauren.)

And because Epic Quote is Epic: "God doesn't want you. But I still do."
<< THAT is how you do awesome and romantic, kapeesh? (None of this vomitous "When you kiss me, I want to die" bullshittery.) Seriously dudes, I told a friend of mine who's never seen the show this quote, and she decided ON THE SPOT that she ships them.

Epicness aside... If I had such happy power, I'd go for Angel/Cordelia in the long run. Probably the best example of a 'good' relationship on either show. Except for the part where the writers failed.

(Unfortunately I have no D/A icons uploaded at the mo, so have an S/B instead. They're nearly just as awesome.)

Angel/Darla for me. I remember watching Angel when Darla was pregnant and thinking 'I hope they give her a soul so she can join the Ats team but still be all badass and snarky'. But it never happened. I've never been too into the Angel/Buffy pairing, but I could see Angel/Cordy because she reminds me of Darla a tiny bit.
Great poll!

Total Spike/Angel shipper, here. I also love him with Darla because of the guhhotness, and Cordy because of the fun (if it had been done right), and Faith because of how he helped her. But my other not-so-seekrit Angel pairing is Angel/Connor because of the total dirtybadwrongness.

Oh, and I also like Angel/Nina because it's not love. It's just dating, and dating is fun!
