Fannish Friday: your ultimate microfandom

I want some conversation! So let's talk about the stuff we love that nobody else loves. I feel certain I've asked about this before, but it can never hurt to ask about it again!

What is the one (or two or three) canon that you love so very much that you're ravenous for fic/meta/fanart/squee about it but you simply can't find it?

The three that come to mind for me are:

+ The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, which has such rich worldbuilding and side characters that I wish could read a thousand fics about virtually anything!

+ M.M. Kaye's The Shadow of the Moon, which has one of my ultimate OTPs, who I would like to read a thousand canon divergence fics in which Alex and Winter fall in love in a thousand different ways.

+ Shut Up! Flower Boy Band, a kdrama about a rock band that has a brush with fame, which has such rich characters and relationships that I would could (again) read a thousand fics about these characters bumping into each other! Jamie wrote me one OT4 fic back in the long-ago days after the show came out, but other than that, there's almost nothing.

There's a 17th-century Spanish play called Fuenteovejuna (sometimes Fuente Ovejuna in English) that I saw in high school and really loved. It's nostalgic for me for a lot of reasons (I saw it at theatre camp and it became a running joke for the rest of the session) but it's also just a really good play about this little town fighting an overlord who's abusing them and how the women in town are the ones who actually get a revolution off the ground. The heroine, Laurencia, also has a really sweet relationship with her husband that could be explored a lot in fic.

It has one work on AO3. This work is in Spanish.

Survivors (2008) - a postapocalyptic UK tv series about a far worse pandemic than 2020. The series was cancelled unfinished, but thank goodness, I located a fic by [personal profile] tarlan that helped resolve the main loose end. I can't even watch the series again now as it's no longer on my streaming sites. If I could rewatch it I'd definitely want more fic based on it.

Too many to name! This is why we have Yuletide, really. <3

When I was making through Jeremy Northam's CV, I found several things I loved and ran to AO3 as they were a bit more mainstream than my usual stuff - but there was no fic/1 weird fic etc/nothing for my ship. At least there was a bit for The Winslow Boy and even more now since Yuletide!

I keep falling in love with radio plays and series, these days and that's always deeply miniscule as fandoms go - but I did get a Craddock & Co fic for Yuletide, so now it has 1! (It's a 3 x 30 mins sweet and fun Victorian detective series about an Uncle and niece, tiny but perfectly formed, yet also obv crying out for more because there is so little of such a good thing).

I have a very specific fic that I want to read for Princess Ida, which is a Gilbert & Sullivan play that is rarely produced because even G&S fans don't like it. The plot involves three men disguising themselves as women to infiltrate a women's college. It is very sexist and can also read as transphobic. The fic I want to read is the version where the main guy is actually an in-denial trans woman, and the events of the play are her gender awakening. She and Ida still end up together because Ida is gay (SO GAY).

I could write this fic myself, but I think I'm the only one who wants it, so it's hard to be motivated. But maybe someone else out there is thinking the same thing! My microfandom soulmate!

A little under a month ago I read Beaslty Beauty by Jennifer Donnelly, and it feels like one of those stories that has rewired my brain. I can't stop thinking about it. I don't think that's because it's the best thing since sliced bread but because I am obsessed with B&tB and I love the concept of this book and am deeply frustrated with many elements of its execution!!! I keep thinking of Benoit Blanc's "It makes no damn sense. Compels me though." That's how I feel about this book. It has zero fics on AO3, and I doubt that anyone but me wants a fic, and yet I have started jotting down ideas for scenes. Which is bonkers because I haven't written a fic or felt any real desire to in almost five years. And it's a problem because I have my own gender-swapped B&tB retelling to finish polishing lol (solid draft is already finished; I purposefully didn't read Beastly Beauty until I'd finished mine, so I wouldn't be influenced).

Small fandom devotees rise up! Like Unselected Journals, CJ Cherryh's Finisterre duology leaves soooo much to be explored in the setting and characters, and I need someone smarter and more prolific than me to start building castles in this sandpit, dangit! Alas, there are exactly two (2) fics that aren't crossovers or my own writing. And they're a great two fics! But. Two ;_;
