What show are YOU watching?

[livejournal.com profile] gabrielleabelle just posted a really lovely post on fandom eyeware and the way we're all watching different shows. It's awesome, and you should all read it.

In said post, [livejournal.com profile] elisi linked to this really awesome article about how we're not all watching the same show. You should all read this one, too, because the rest of this post will not make sense without it.

A lot of her names for the shows are hilariously awesome, and it inspired me. To share with you some of the shows that I've watched.

For instance, I'm always watching this show called the Buffy Summers Is the Coolest Person In the History of the Universe—Especially in the Later Seasons—Show and I'm also always watching the Spike Owns My Soul, So What Does He Need One of His Own For? Show. In earlier seasons, I watched the Oz Is Existentially Awesome Show and/or the Cordelia Chase Thinks It and Says It Show or the Giles is British-er Than You Show. I was also really fond of the Spike and Dawn Are Outcasts of the Universe Together Show, but that one got canceled. Thankfully, the Girls Kick Ass--Sometimes with Rocket Launchers!--Show stuck around. S7 is not only the Buffy and Spike’s Private, Beautiful Love Show but also the Andrew Wells Makes Me Laugh So Hard My Sides Ache Show and the Dawn Summers Is Cooler Than You Show.

And, of course, whenever I watch any Joss show, I'm also always watching both the the Witty Banter and Punny Quip Show and the 1000 Ways to Fail at Racial Sensitivity Show.

There was this other show I watched that was called the Veronica Mars is Smarter Than You Show (obviously), but also went by a lot of other names:

- the Logan Echolls: Snarking His Way into Television History Show (thanks, Joss!)
- the The Papa Mars Is a Badass and Should Say ‘Who’s Your Daddy?’ Every Episode Show
- the Wallace Fennel Proves He Is the Greatest BFF Ever—Again! Show
- the Kendall and Cassidy Take Over the World Show (I think I may be the only one watching this one)
- the Every Line Is Quotable Show

So. Ask me about other shows-within-shows that I watched! Tell me which shows you were watching! Let's turn this into a thing! Don't leave me hanging! I'm excited!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee!

The "I Have a Weakness for Misfits Forming Families Show"

The "Quit Making Me Laugh--I'm Gonna Have a Hernia! Show"

The "When Did Joel McHale Get So Hot? Show"

The "Troy and Abed Are the Greatest BFFs EVER! Show"

The "I Girlcrush on Alison Brie Show"

The "Why Are the Dean and Senor Chang Not In Every Episode? Show"

The "Pierce Makes Me More Uncomfortable Than Anyone Else Alive Show"

And, I'm sad to say, the "Jeff and Annie Will Never Be Able to Resist Their Attraction Show"

[identity profile] ava-leigh-fitz.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I APPROVE OF ALL OF THESE. Ah, the Jeff/Annie thing, I like it? But the age thing does sort of squick me and I don't know why? But I lovelovelove Annie so anything that has more of her in, I'm game for.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY!

I understand about the age thing. I'm usually very, very against the whole unequal balance of power that accompanies that large of an age gap. But I think because I first saw her on Mad Men, I think of her as a little older and have a harder time believing she's 18. So I kind of...gloss over it.

Also: I just saw An Education the other night. Can I be Carey Mulligan? First Doctor Who, now this? She is made of awesomeness and beautiful things!

[identity profile] ava-leigh-fitz.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I do know what you mean, I do sort of forget occasionally that she's supposed to be 18 and then I remember and I'm like, oh.

I haven't seeeeeeen it yet but I want to! Soon! Soon I shall!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, "Oh," is about the right reaction, I think.

You should! I just assumed you had because you would love it so much! And Olivia Williams! And Emma Thompson for five minutes! And Rosamund Pike is epically awesome! It's very, very lovely.

[identity profile] gabrielleabelle.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG! We were watching the EXACT SAME SHOW!!!

...but you knew that. :)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so not shocked! ;)

[ETA] Actually, your show probably also had more stuff about Willow, which mine doesn't. But other than that!
Edited 2010-02-09 15:57 (UTC)

[identity profile] gabrielleabelle.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It does, indeed. But I just woke up so I'm too tired to come up with clever names for it. :)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally understand!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I was watching it too!!!

Kendall and Cassidy Take Over the World Show
Ffff, I'm convinced they're taking over the afterlife ;)

For me, Smallville? Is CHLOE!Ville. I waded through way too much fail for that girl!crush and I am still prepared to do so *hangs head*

Skins is the Magnificent Bastard Rehab show, yes? What else?

And I spent ten years reading Ron and Hermione and the UST of Epic

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Ffff, I'm convinced they're taking over the afterlife ;)
THEY SO ARE! I once started a fic like that....

But yeah, I've always wanted the show: Neptune: The Afterlife, since half of the interesting characters on that show were dead!

I never really did Smallville, but I suspect it would have been Chloeville for me, too. No need to hang your head!

Yes! Skins so is that! Yes!

It's also the I Can't Decide If I Love or Hate Cassie, But I Think It's Love Show, the Poor Sid! Show, the When Did Michelle Get So Relatable? Show, the Girls (and Sid) Slapping/Punching Tony Show, the Maxxie and Anwar Are Going to Kill Me with Cuteness Show, the I'm Suddenly Deeply Invested in Jal/Chris Show, the Why Do I Ship Tony/Michelle This Hard? Show, the Do People Really Live Like This? Show, and the I'm Partially Watching for the Credits Sequence Show.

But most importantly, it's the: Finally! A Teen Show without Any Stupid Insistence on Popularity Heirarchy!!!!! Show.

And I spent ten years reading Ron and Hermione and the UST of Epic
Hey! We were reading the same books! Yay!

(Anonymous) 2010-02-09 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I was watching the Veronica Mars is Smarter Than You Show, too along with theMac Rocks Show and Logan Echolls' Smirk is a Thing of Beauty Show!

Right now I'm watching the Castiel's Deadpan Delivery Never Gets Old Show and the Sam Has No Sense of Humor Show.

What other shows are you watching? I'm afraid I can't think of anything witty about Friday Night Lights for Gilmore Girls, but I bet we are and were watching the same shows.

[identity profile] brunettepet.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoops, I thought I was signed in.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! It happens!

My Macness was more the Mac and Cassidy Are the Cutest Thing in the World!--Oh...Wait...Show. But I was totally watching the smirking thing, too!

Ha! I was watching, for years, the Dean Winchester Hates Himself--and I Love It! Show and the Bobby is a Badass Show. Also, the Quit Whining, Sammy! Show. But then the At Least Jo and Ellen Are Out There Kicking Ass Show got canceled, and I said farewell.

I was watching the Eric and Tammy's Marriage Show and the Oh Matt Saracen! Show and the Please Let Tyra Escape from Dillon and Accomplish Her Dreams Show and the Finally! Realism on Television! Show. But I'm way behind. I need to catch up.

I also watched the Jess is Awesome Show, the I Wouldn't Want to be Related to Richard and Emily, but I Sure Do Love Them as Characters Show, the Stars Hollow Has the Greatest Citizens Ever Show, the I Still Can't Believe Sebastian Bach Is On This Show Show, and the Seriously, Lorelei and Luke, Just Get Together! Show. But then the Wow, I Can Relate to Rory Show became the Wait, No I Can't, and I'm Beginning to Hate Her Show. Deeply tragic.

Hahaha! I'd forgotten theI Can't believe Sebastian Bach Is On This Show and He's Selling Sandwiches Show, but it gave me pause every time it was on!

You really need to play catch up on the Tyra Collette Deserves Better Show. It's still wonderful. The Tim Riggins Will Never Learn His Lesson Show is also very entertaining.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so madly in love with how much fun Sebastian Bach always looked like he was having. It never failed to make an entire episode for me. He's fabulous.

Tyra Collette Deserves Better Show OH YES! I always thought so. I really, really do need to catch up.

And: hee! That Riggins show makes me giggle!

[eta] I can't believe I misspelled Tami's name upthread! I'm an awful person!

Friday Night Lights is also the Tim Can Man My Riggens Any Day Show (sailor reference for a football show that really isn't about football doesn't necessarily equate fail, right?), the Can Julie Taylor Please Shut Up And Act Like An Adult Now? Show, and the I Can't Believe I'm Actually Becoming Fond of Buddy Garrity Show.

[identity profile] finkpishnets.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I was absolutely watching the same Buffy and Veronica Mars shows as you (with lots and lots of Cassidy Casablancas May Be A Villain But He's Still More Awesome Than Anyone Ever Show).

Oh, and I totally agree with your Community ones, too.

Ok, I'm watching:

- the Sam Who? It's All About Cas and Dean These Days! Show
- the Castiel Is The Best Thing About This Show and Possibly TV In General Show

- the Who Gives A Damn About Eric and Donna, It's All About Jackie and Hyde! Show
- the Kelso and Fez Are The Best (Mostly) Heterosexual Life-mates Ever! Show
- the Jackie Burkhart Can Be As Much Of A Bitch As She Wants, She's Still Cooler Than You Show

- the Every Time I Start To Like A Character I'm Reminded They're Kind Of Evil...and Then I Figure 'What The Hell' and Like Them Anyway! Show
- the Paul Ballard's Obsession With Caroline Is Just Creepy Show
- the Echo Is Was Too Good For A Creeper Like Paul Ballard Show
- the Victor and Sierra Are The Most Adorable In The History Of Ever Show
- the I Ship Topher/Claire So, So Hard Show
- the But I Also Ship Topher/Bennett Because How Could I Not? Show
- the Topher Brink Could Totally Take Over The World and I'd Swoon Whilst He Did It Show
- the DeWitt and Dominic Have So Much Sexual Tension - It's Awesome Show
- the Oh Look, Joss Broke My Heart Again Show
- the I Really Want To Read/Write Topher Brink/Fred Burkle Fic Show

Haha, this is so much fun! I could think of a bunch of others, but I know you watch these :D

Oh, we watch such similar shows!!!! *loves it*

And yes! I was watching the same Cassidy-centric show! OH CASSIDY!

Ha! My show was always, Sam Who!

I actually did like Eric a whole, whole lot, but I was aaaaaallllllll about Jackie and Hyde. And a general hearty YES to all of your T7S shows!

I would also add: the Even If This Show Was Just About Red and Kitty, I'd Still Watch Show, the How Many Times Can Red Say 'Dumbass'? Show, and the I Want to Be Part of the Basement Gang So Bad! Show.

YESYESYES to your Dollhouse views! Although...I loved Topher and Claire's interaction, but I wouldn't say I ship it. BUT HE AND FRED WOULD BE EPIC.

My thoughts in general on Dollhouse went like this: ENVER! SIERRA/VICTOR OMG CUTENESS!!!! DEWITT'S A BADASS! SO IS DOMINIC! TOPHEEEEEEER!!! TOPHER/BENNETT! NOW I WEEP! PRIYA/TONY HAVE A BAAAABY! I LOVE ZONE MORE THAN I SHOULD! OH AN ALMOST HAPPY ENDING!

Yeah. Pretty much like that.

[identity profile] finkpishnets.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely to the '70's Show ones.

No, I can say without a doubt, I Ship Topher/Claire (/Whiskey/Whoever She May Be) a whoooole heap. I have since, like, the first episode. And then it just kept getting better and better.

Yes to your additional Dollhouse ones! Although, I cannot express how much I sobbed at the end of Epitaph Part 2. So much. My Mum had to give me major hugs whilst a cried. But then, what more could I expect from Joss? Heartbreaking and still hopeful - his trademark!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see the appeal, but I didn't get very into it...possibly because at the outset I was not a Topher fan. By the time I became a Topher fan, she was out of the picture re: him.

Awww! I didn't cry, probably because my roommate was in the room watching me watch and laughing whenever I gasped or yelled at the screen (it happens). If I'd been alone...yeah, I'd'a probably been crying!

[identity profile] finkpishnets.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, see, I loved Topher from the very, very beginning and that stuck :D

Wow, yeah, I can't even express how hard I was sobbing - my Mum was like 'So, Joss did it again, huh?' and then held my whilst I cried and talked about how I kind of should have expected it and mentioned Buffy and Angel and Serenity...which, yeah, didn't help...♥

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHA! I am loving this mental picture! And your mom! That's fabulous!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
probably because my roommate was in the room watching me watch and laughing whenever I gasped or yelled at the screen

Grrr! I don't like it when people do that.

[identity profile] anythingbutgrey.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh Look, Joss Broke My Heart Again Show

lol so much always.

[identity profile] finkpishnets.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
IKR? I should have expected it, but somehow I seemed to have forgotten...*sigh*

The Every Time I Start To Like A Character I'm Reminded They're Kind Of Evil...and Then I Figure 'What The Hell' and Like Them Anyway! Show could be any Joss show, really.

Ohhhh Smallville. I endured it for three seasons and then gave up. But I sometimes couldn't resist and kept catching random episodes just for Chloe.

She should go meet up with Sam and Dean and teach them a few things in the Put the Winchesters in Crossovers and Have Them Learn a Few Things about Strong Women Show.

YESSSS on Skins, especially the last one! I never thought about the hierarchy thing before, but it’s absolutely true. Everyone loves each other and would probably burst out laughing if you brought up teen hierarchy around them.

-the I Will Kidnap the Main Characters and Call them Squishy and They Shall be Mine Show
-the What Other Shows Pull off in One Season, We Can Pull off in One Episode! Show
-the I Melt Whenever Anybody Hugs Anybody Show
-the Maxxie’s Megawatt Smile Makes the Sun Look Like a Black Hole Show
- sadly, in S2, I also had to watch the Argh, Give Anwar an Episode so I Understand Why He’s So Desperate Show :/
-theMichelle and Cassie and Sid Screwed Up Bad; Why Do I Still Love Them So Hard? Show
-the Effy’s Facial Expressions are Way Better than Her Dialogue Show
-the Chris/Jal: Fastest Case of OTP-worthy Ever Show
-the Thank You, Bus, For Hitting Tony Show

The Chronicles of Edmund are a favorite read of mine...

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Put the Winchesters in Crossovers and Have Them Learn a Few Things about Strong Women Show.
Hey! I love that show! I write that show!

It is so, so, so, so, so refreshing that there's no clique, no "popular" group, no outcasts...it's like, on any other show, Tony and Michelle would be super popular and Cassie would be with the art freaks, and Jal would be with the band geeks and Maxxie would be with the theater kids and Sid and Anward would just be geeks, and NONE OF IT WOULD BE ANY GOOD.

Clearly, I have feelings about this.

OMG YESYESYESYESYES to all of your shows. YEEEEEES.

Hee! I love the Chronicles of Edmund! They're fab!

[identity profile] afterthree.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Thumbs up to Chronicles of Edmund! :D

oh my god this is my favorite I could do this all day

See, now, I'm personally a much more regular watcher of The Buffy Is At Her Awesomest In the High School Years Show, and the The Evil Spike Is My Favorite Flavor Show (which, when I am feeling cynical, is called The Spike's Character Peaked In Season Two Show.) I am also a big fan of The Buffy + Angel Are Soul Mates Forever Even If They Move On To Other People Show and The Xander&Willow Are the Original BFF OTP Show.

When it comes to Firefly, we all know I am a fan of The River Tam Is Cooler Than Absolutely Everybody Else Show and The Thank You For Existing, Malcolm Reynolds Show and The Saffron Should Have Been in More Episodes Show and The This Is Basically the Best Cast Ever Show and The But Why Are The Chinese People Invisible Show. (well, the last one I am not exactly a fan of, but I do end up watching it a lot. I feel it's something I should do.)

As for VM, I am a frequent watcher of The Veronica/Weevil Is Wildly Underrated Show and The I Love Logan But I Refuse To Woobify Him Show and The Actually, Veronica Is Even Cooler When She Doesn't Have Boy Drama Going On (Pity That Takes Up So Much of Her Time) Show and The Daddy Mars Is The Best Show.

(i want to keep going into forever somebody stop meeee)

We were watching very, very different shows, clearly! But yours seems to be the only one that ever makes it into articles. I'm always confused by any time I see some blogger or whatever writing about the show, people act like the later seasons don't exist. And I'm like, "BUT BUT SYMBOLISM! CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! NUUUUUUAAAAAANCE!" And no one listens. *sigh*

I guess you are the right one, though. And I am clearly wrong. [ETA] I just realized that sounded like I was bitching at you, but I would never, ever, ever bitch at you because I love you so! That was a universal bitch, which does not apply to you at all, wonderful person!

Hee! The "Thank You For Existin" and "Best Cast Ever" shows are my faaaaaaavorite! And the "Invisible Chinese People" show makes me want to cry.

I also was quite fond of the OMG A Couple In a Stable Relationship!!! Show and the Jayne Cobb Is Funnier Than You Show. And the Ooooh! Pretty! Show. Among other things.

The I Love Logan But I Refuse To Woobify Him Show and The Actually, Veronica Is Even Cooler When She Doesn't Have Boy Drama Going On (Pity That Takes Up So Much of Her Time) Show and The Daddy Mars Is The Best Show.
I agree with all of these!

And hey! Why don't you go on forever?

I guess you are the right one, though. And I am clearly wrong.

You're not wrong! That's why opinions exist, and they are beautiful. It's equally possible that I am a sheep and you are a progressive rebel. (See? Different eyeware!)

Oh, I loved the Stable Relationship show. I always found it baffling that some people thought it was the Troubled Marriage show, but hey, that's how it works. ;)

Hee! I can't go on forever, I have a paper to write! *flail*

Also, I have just been reading your Skins ones upthread, and now I must list my own shows I watch for that as well:

-The Sid Is The Twin of My Soul Show
- The Oh Man I Want To Wrap Cassie In A Blanket And Fix All Her Troubles Show
- The Hell Yeah Jal's Snark Is The Best Kind Of Snark Show
- The Dammit Tony I Hate Love HATE You Show
- The Effy Owns My Soul Show
- The Maxxie Oliver Is A Star Show
- The Michelle, Dollface, Why Do You Put Up With Mr. Stonem's Douchebaggery So Often Show
- The CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSS Show

Re: oh my god this is my favorite I could do this all day

The Thank You For Existing, Malcolm Reynolds Show indeed!

[identity profile] hkath.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Kendall and Cassidy Take Over the World Show

I watched this one for a while! But then I got distracted by the Dick's Pain Is Deep And Gift-Wrapped In Evil Show and the Sheriff Lamb's Traumatic Past Will Never Be Explained, Will It? Show and finally the I Really Kinda Miss Weevil Show.

Right now I'm watching the Tim Riggins Grows Up To Be A Wonderful Person Show. It's also often the Tami Taylor Knows Everyting Ever Show and the Landry Clarke Has Ruined Me For Other Men Show.

I also watch the Angel & Demon Sandwich With Emo Bread Show, but that one's getting really old. I miss when it was the Stinky Brothers Kill Monsters And Scam Credit Cards Show.

Oh, and I own all the DVDs of the Emily Gilmore Wins At Life Show, which is also sometimes the Dean Somehow Gets Dumber And Dumber Show, as well as being the Lorelai Makes Mistakes (But I Love Her For It) Show, and the Every Band Mentioned On This Show Is Great And You Will Love Them! Show, for which I am eternally grateful.

I spent several hours this past weekend watching the Former Castmembers From Veronica Mars Are Awesome And Swear Profusely Show, which I highly recommend, although I have to download it because I don't get Starz.

I was thinking of doing this on my LJ when I read that article this morning. I still might!

[identity profile] pamsblau.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! When it comes to Buffy, i think we're watching the same show.I would add ,though that i am watching an expanded version of your Buffy and Spike’s Private, Beautiful Love Show. Its's the Buffy and Spike are so meant for each other and they need to be together, as kids shout,FOREVAH! Show.

Oh, God, how much i love it.

1000 Ways to Fail at Racial Sensitivity Show.

This isn't an issue that's really made itself noticeable to me. Any chance you could just cite an example or two for my brain to ponder?

Some of my shows:

VM: Why Doesn't Weevil Get More Screentime? Show, The Keith Mars is the Best Dad Ever Show, The Duncan Is Not Worth It Show
Firefly: The Most Beautiful People Ever Show, The Why Can't We See More Zoe/Wash Private Time Show, The Zoe Says, Man Up! Show
Dollhouse: The Topher Makes Me Cry Show, The November is So Very Pretty Show, The Agent Ballard, I Love You But Get Over Your Crush Show
Supernatural: The Dean Makes Fun of Everyone Show , The Dean Wants Pie Show, The Sam Needs To Stop Being Crazy and Evil and Lame Show, The Can We Occasionally Have A Kickass Woman That Doesn't Die Show

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-02-10 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Any chance you could just cite an example or two for my brain to ponder? Oh, God. Where to start? Sometime I think [livejournal.com profile] madcap_shiny and I need to do an epically long post on racial issues in his works. Of course, two privileged middle-class white girls may not be the best people to write it, but....

There's the white-washed casting: Buffy is so white it's ridiculous. And the characters of color are nearly always in service of a white character's story--that's certainly the case with Kendra and the Primitive, both the Slayers Spike killed, Xander's mummy-girl girlfriend, most of the Potentials, I-can't-even-remember-his-name from "Pangs"--and/or only present in one episode (seriously, was Sunnydale High entirely white?). Then there's evil: Mr. Trick or the Shadow Men. Who're you left with? Robin Wood. And Forrest. Rona's the least likable Potential. And all the other non-white Potentials die.

Angel is set in L.A. of all places, but it's still largely white-washed, and are there any Latino characters besides Numero Cinco? It does a tad bit better on a more diverse cast: oh, look! An actual person-who-isn't-white in the main cast! But he's the least developed of all the main characters and often gets shunted to the side (which is a shame, because every once in a while J. August Richards would get to actually do something and prove that he was more than capable: he gave me shivers in the White Room in "A Hole in the World"). You've also got Gavin Park, who is awesome, but hardly a well-developed role (plus: evil).

Firefly might be worst, because even though Joss does seem to be doing better in casting the main characters, it's very disturbing the way he uses Chinese culture and makes a huuuuge deal about how it's combined with American culture to create the future and he uses geishas from the Japenese tradition and (really horribly basterdized, apparently) Chinese language, but there is one character in the show who's Asian with a speaking line...and she's a prostitute. That's cultural appropriation in its purest form.

In Dollhouse, I really don't think he thinks about the fact that it's really troubling to see another Asian girl as the sexual victim (multiple times in the show)--Asian women are always presented in a sexual context in American media. I don't think he does these things out of malice; I just really, really, really think he doesn't stop to think about racial issues at all. Clearly, he's started listening that he needs to have more diverse casts, but he doesn't really think about what that means: these wouldn't normally be enough to bring up on their own, but added to all the other ways he fails, plus the fact that it's happened twice: he has two older black men cast in the Magical Negro protect-and/or-advise-the-white-protagonists roles (plus, one of them turns out to be evil!).

Again, any of these things on their own wouldn't be worth complaining about (well, maybe the Firefly thing), but add them all up (just like on AtS, you add up all the sexist things), and you get racial insensitivity.

I was also watching the Duncan Is Not Worth It Show. And I loooove Keith Mars!

The Most Beautiful People Ever Show, The Why Can't We See More Zoe/Wash Private Time Show, The Zoe Says, Man Up! Show
Yay! We're watching the same shows!

I'm right there with you on Dollhouse, too (and can I say that I hope Miracle Laurie gets tons and tons of work so that we can see her be beautiful and show off her kick-ass acting skills all over? YES!).

OH YES! We were definitely watching the same SPNs! But I have parted ways with it....

Gosh. I think you just got me on board the Joss Fails at Racial Sensitivity train. All very, very valid points. Particularly that bit about how Dollhouses sexually victimizes yet another Asian girl. Also, I can't believe the fact that we never see anyone of Asian descent in Firefly, considering how much it's supposed to be a West meets East future vision, never even occurred to me. Don't I feel dense, now?

I will say that there is one thing that I think Joss does admirably on when it comes to race issues, and that's interracial romantic relationships. While mainstream media appears to be getting better on making non-white people the center of their shows/movies/commercials, they still all SUCK at portraying positive interracial relationships. I think that America still seems to have a problem with this issue. I'm kind of convinced that if Michelle Obama was a white woman, that Barack would never have won the presidency. So I do think that this is one way in which Joss kind of excels. To break it down:

Buffy: Giles/Olivia, Buffy/Robin, Faith/Robin, Xander/One of the Slayers from the comics who's name I can't remember...
Angel: Gunn/Fred
Firefly: Zoe/Wash (One of my most favorite couples ever, PS)
Dollhouse: Sierra/Victor, Boyd/Whiskey (From what I saw during Epitaph One)

Gosh. I think you just got me on board the Joss Fails at Racial Sensitivity train. Yay!

Yeah, it's not something I noticed either, to be honest. I had to have a lot of this stuff pointed out to me, which I guess just proves my own privilege.

I totally agree about the interracial romances. They aren't even commented on in his work: they're just there. I think that's fabulous, and he deserves props for that.

I think that America still seems to have a problem with this issue. I'm kind of convinced that if Michelle Obama was a white woman, that Barack would never have won the presidency. Huh. I'd never thought of that, but now that you mention it...I think you're right. Sad, sad, sad.

Let's see. Tonight I'll be watching My Brain Hurts And I Love It Show, also known as the I Heart Sawyer Platonically or Not!Platonically Show the I Giggle Whenever Jack Cries And Is Full Of Self-Loathing Show, the Hurley Rocks And If You Kill Him I'll Cry Show, the I Miss Juliet Already Show, and the Ben Linus Is A Brilliantly Sneaky, Evil Bastard Who Could Teach Angelus A Few Things About Manipulation But I Still Want Him To Be Redeemed Show.

I loved the OMG! Starbuck Is Just Like Spike! Show, and I'm curious about the Yay! Spike Is Back In My TV With Jane Controlling Him Even If I Have To Wade Through Obscure Theology Metaphors To Get To Him! Show.

I feel like we were watching the same Buffy show! Especially this:

S7 is not only the Buffy and Spike’s Private, Beautiful Love Show but also the Andrew Wells Makes Me Laugh So Hard My Sides Ache Show

YES FOREVER! Spike and Buffy's relationship in s7 is my faaaaaaaavorite time for them. Private is such a good word for that time period. And ANDREW. Hilarious! I always roll my eyes a bit when people are like, HE'S GROSS! HE MURDERED HIS BEST FRIEND! WAH WAH! Uhm, duh! But it's TV, people, calm down. Embrace the HILARITY he brings!

I think we were watching a different Veronica Mars show, though. I enjoyed:

- the Veronica and Weevil Have A Lot of Chemistry! Show
- the I Adore Deputy Leo; Can He Stay Forever? Show
- the Post-Season 1 Logan Is A Giant Bore Show
- the Veronica/Logan Was Much Better Hypothetically Show
- the Piz Was The Best Part of Season 3 Show
- the I Actually LIKE Season 3 Show

For Community I watch:

- the Jeff Winger Adores Annie Edison Show
- the Troy and Abed Bromance Show
- the Pierce is HILARIOUS in His Ignorance Show
- the Senor Chang and Dean Pelton Should Be Around Always Show

For The Office:

- the I'm Over Jim/Pam and Have Been Since Season 3 Show
- the Michael Scott Is My Favorite Show
- the Dwight Scrhrute Is An Amazing Character Show
- the Ryan Should Have Dated Pam Show
- the Toby Should Have Dated Pam Show
- the I Like Roy and Karen Show

For Friday Night Lights:

- the Guaranteed To Make Me Cry At Least Once Per Episode Show
- the So What If I 'Ship Landry/Julie? They're Cute! Show
- the Tim Riggins Can Do No Wrong Show
- the Coach/Mrs. Coach Are The Best Married Couple EVER Show

Hahahah! I could keep going and GOING.

the Veronica/Logan Was Much Better Hypothetically Show

HI. I totally thought I was the only one who watched this show! *high-five*

I am also a hardcore fan of the Deputy Leo Show. I was so very, very sad when that one went away.

How about The 1960s Is Glamorous Yet Fucked Up Show?

Kendall and Cassidy Take Over the World Show

No, I enjoyed this show also ;)

And yeah, I think we're pretty much watching the same shows.

Although, I gotta say, the Chloe worship in Smallville fandom constantly boggles my mind. (It's more like the Chloe Needs to Get Over Her Clark Hero Worship Already And Then I Might Respect Her show for me.) I'm much more inclined to watch the Lex Luthor is a Bad-Ass MoFo, Respect It Show, the Lana Lang Is Secretly Also A Bad-Ass MoFo Show, or the Lois Lane Pwns You Show.

I'm in the middle of rewatching The Loneliest Man in the Universe Losing the Things He Tries to Hold Onto and Routinely Ripping My Heart Out and The Doctor and Donna Are My Platonic Old Married Couple, and also Oh My God the Master is Terrifying and Can We Have More of Him Please?.

Skins was my Chris Miles is my Favorite and I Am Actually a Little Stressed Out over the Well-being of these Fictional, Hardpartying Children but is now more like Damn New Cast, Get Off My Lawn.

Also this post is kind of amazing.

I was watching "Leave it to Beaver and Mac in Europe" show for a while...or maybe that's just the spinoff I wanted. Before, you know, certain plot points. Also the Logan Echolls: Snarking His Way into Television History Show is PERFECT.

Let's see, what else...during season 3 VM I was watching the "This will get better at some point, right?" show, which actually I probably watch more than I should... though, honestly, the Veronica Mars is Smarter Than You Show tends to really sum it all up.

But is VM more quotable than Buffy? Really? : P

also i can't believe you found that icon! it's so ooold! : )
