dear yuletide author
Dear author:
Hello and happy Yuletide! Thanks for choosing one of my fandoms and thanks in advance for the story! I always find that the writing is the most enjoyable, rewarding part of Yuletide and I hope you feel the same way.
The prompts are here purely for your convenience and to get the plot bunnies stirring. If none of them appeal to you, it's fine to go in a different direction.
For the shippy requests, it is totally fine to include sexual content as long as it's not just porn without plot. Porn rooted in plot or in characterization is my preference if you want to write porn at all. But porn is by no means necessary--I will happily read any rating.
In all cases, I am fine with you including any additional characters from the canon so long as the focus is on one or more of the requested characters.
I love canon divergence, but please no AUs that change the setting--I don't want to read stuff set in high school or coffee shops or with superheroes or whatever.
DNWS: PWP, character-bashing, infidelity, "onscreen" rape/non-con (dubcon of the shag-or-die/sex pollen or we're-forced-to-have-sex-due-to-circumstances are okay if it's between mentioned ships), AUs that change the setting (no high schools, coffee shops, or superheroes, please!), unmitigated fluff (some fluff is fine, but please temper it with other things), humiliation, broad humor, OOC, baby fic (meaning fic that focuses on the ship having/adopting a child. Incidental children are fine). For porn, I like dom/sub dynamics, but other than that, I'm not really into kinky stuff.
General likes: angst, especially if it ends happily; hurt/comfort; mutual pining; in character characters; complicated relationships between women; good worldbuilding; outsider povs; location/setting as character; good people trying to do the right thing; bad people trying to do the right thing; found families; total devotion/us against the world dynamics; religion/faith/doubt treated seriously and complicatedly; Jewish takes on anything.
Fandom tropes I'm into: mutual pining, arranged marriages, soulbonds of whatever kind, post-apocalyptic stuff (as long as it's within the overall canon), forced proximity, enemies to lovers, amnesia fic.
The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion - Beth Brower
Characters: Emma M. Lion, "Young" Nigel Hawkes, Mary Bairrage, worldbuilding
My gift must feature one or more of my chosen character tags (giver's choice)
My new obsession of 2024! I read the first 7 installments all in a great big gulp this year, and I am madly in love with them. If we match on this, let's be friends so we can talk about the series!
I'm not asking for anything shippy for this fandom unless you want to write about Mary and her Professor. I would thoroughly enjoy that. But I don't want anything focused on Emma falling/being in love (I suspect we're going to get quite enough of that from the series itself) and I'm not asking for Emma/Hawkes. I just picked three of my very favorite characters from the series, so write about any/all of them as you desire.
And I love every single character in the series, so please include anyone and everyone you want to include!
I also looooove the worldbuilding of St. Crispian's, the weirdness of the disappearing objects, all their silly and lovable traditions, etc. Anything that lets us explore that world more would make me happy!
Some prompts:
+ Mary and her professor falling in love. Do they know they're falling in love? Do they talk about anything besides their work? What is going on with them?
+ Hawkes backstory. This is sure to be Jossed later, but who cares? I just love him so much and I'd love to hear about his childhood, his university days, how he settled into St. Crispian's, whatever
+ Emma's growing up years!
+ Emma somehow starts a new St. Crispian's tradition
+ More about the ghost or St. Crispian holidays or anything at all
+ Mary backstory! How did she meet Jack? What was her childhood like?
+ The Jane Eyres!
+ Really anything will make me happy!
Fandom: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke
Characters:Catherine of Winchester, Worldbuilding
My gift must feature one or more of my chosen character tags (giver's choice)
*bangs on the table* WORLDBUILDING. With this fandom, I am ravenous for anything that replicates the feel of the book (footnotes welcome!), especially the wild, fae York-adjacent magic. If you want to bring in some canon side characters like the Raven King, etc. that would be great, but I am not really wanting anything focused on the characters from the novel. I'm all about the atmosphere, the eerie magic, the sense of history, the scholarly bent, the pastiche of the 19th century novel, etc. Alternately, I would love anything that explores Catherine of Winchester more.
I don't have any specific prompts to share with you, but since you're brave enough to agree to offer worldbuilding for this fandom, I am confident that anything you write will be wonderful.
Fandom: Seventy-Two Letters - Ted Chiang
Characters: Worldbuilding
This short story made me feel some kind of way. For HaShem’s sake, someone tell me what’s going on in the margins of this world! Either turn it Jewish or turn it queer, I’m not picky!
So the rich white dudes are busy turning Kabbalistic ideas about naming into a science for ends in capitalism or eugenics. Horrifying! But I do not believe that Jews are just sitting around pouting about how their holy exercise in mysticism is being misused. Is there a Marx figure who’s writing manifestos about how an intrinsically Jewish practice has been stolen by the worst of the goyim? Is there a Herzl figure searching for a political solution? Are there women demanding more egalitarian access to Kabbalah as a way of preserving it? Is there an overlap between Bund activism and the need to take back Kabbalah? Is an anarchist collective marrying the exploitation of the proletariat and the exploitation of intrinsically Jewish spirituality and getting really, really pissed off about it?
And what about the past? This has clearly been going on for some centuries (probably since the Renaissance?) so how has it affected the standing of Jewish communities in various parts of the world? Are they treated worse or better?
Alternately: I am not wild about this enforcement of the sexual binary! What is going on with trans people in this world????
Fiddler on the Roof (1971)
Characters: Hodel, Perchik
My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags
My first choice for this fandom is anything at all about Hodel and Perchik falling in love. The proposal scene in the film is my favorite proposal scene from any form of media ever, so that should give you some idea of what I'm into with this dynamic. I mean, it's got to be so frustrating being in love with this guy who can only see anything through the lens of class struggle, but also Hodel clearly loves how idealistic and committed Perchik is. And I believe he would never have fallen for her (certainly not enough to ask her to marry him) if she wasn't as smart as he was and at least open to his political priorities. So I want to watch two revolutionaries (or, really, a revolutionary and a potential revolutionary) fall in love with both their brains and their hearts.
There's also the thrill of them falling in love within the strict limits of their world: obviously they can't spend much (if any) time alone, there's always sisters around, they can't let anyone know they're attracted to each other. They obviously don't express their feelings for each other in any way until the proposal scene, but the connection is there and growing, and this gives you plenty of room to play around with my favorite thing: people communicating love without actually verbalizing it.
Ideally, I'd love this to be set during the canon, but if you want to write something that is set after the movie but with some insight into how they came to fall in love, I'd enjoy that too. If you want to alter the movie's timeline so that Perchik is with them longer so that he and Hodel can get to know each other better, I'd love that.
I also adore all the other girls and their love interests, so something that looks at the three different couples would be wonderful too. If you don't want to write something shippy: sister!fic would be great! I love all the girls, so anything about the complicated bonds of sisterhood, about learning to understand each other even when you're so different, about their differing relationships to their Jewishness, etc. would make me really happy.
Some prompts:
+ What is it about Hodel that initially catches Perchik's attention? I feel confident that it's got to be something to do with her impressing him with her thoughtfulness, but I would love to see that up close.
+ How does Hodel really feel about this random guy who's living with them? Does she think he's full of it? Is she impressed right away by his passion? Is he especially great interacting with her little sisters?
+ In a world of such limitations on interactions between unmarried men and women, how do they find time to get to know each other?
+ Has Hodel read some political stuff before/did she have political opinions before they met?
+ Maybe something from the pov of Shprintze and/or Bielke about watching their older sisters fall in love
+ Something that compares/contrasts the three oldest sisters' romantic arcs. I really love Tzeitel/Motel to bits, and while I have some mixed feelings about Chava/Fyedka (mostly related to the religious stuff--if he would just convert, all my problems would be solved!), they are very sweet as well. I love how all three of the girls are their own matchmakers and their decisions lead them in such different directions.
+ Tell me about their sex life. (Two virgins figuring this thing out? So much potential there!) But don't only tell me about their sex life. (By which I mean, no PWP.)
Btw: I love treats, so anyone who sees this and is inspired, please feel free to treat away!
