Dear Sufficiently Advanced author
Dear author,
I'm so excited to participate in this particular exchange! I think I will be easy to please, so while I've included a few prompts and thoughts about what I like generally in each fandom, I do want to encourage you to follow where your muse takes you. In my experience, writing is the most rewarding part of participating in an exchange, and I hope you feel that way about writing for me. Thank you for loving one of my fandoms!
General preferences and thoughts:
I have requested characters in some fandoms and none in others. But even for the fandoms I requested characters for, I would be equally happy with something worldbuilding-focused. As the kids say these days, I love the vibes of these books and would like to spend more time in the worlds they evoke. If you aim for a story that feels like the original canon, then I'm certain I'll be thrilled with whatever you create.
I can probably assume that you won't change the canon setting for the fic (i.e. putting the Queen's Thief characters in high school or the Earthsea characters in a coffee shop) as that would defeat the point of this exchange, but just in case it needs to be explicitly said: I don't want that! On the other hand, canon divergence is my favorite genre of fic, so if you want to write something based on just about any "what if" you can think of, please do!
DNWS: PWP (sex is fine, but I don't want to read straight-up porn), character-bashing, infidelity, "onscreen" rape (attempted-but-thwarted is okay), AUs that change the setting, unmitigated fluff (some fluff is fine, but please temper it with other things), insta!love, humiliation, bathroom humor, OOC, baby fic (meaning fic that focuses on the ship having/adopting a child. Incidental children are fine).
General likes: angst, especially if it ends happily; hurt/comfort; mutual pining; in character characters; complicated relationships between women; friendships; good worldbuilding; longfic; characters having conflicting viewpoints/moral perspectives but neither of them being wrong; outsider povs; location/setting as character; good people trying to do the right thing; bad people trying to do the right thing; found families; total devotion/us against the world dynamics; anything that explores religion or faith thoughtfully; politics/intrigue.
Fandom: Earthsea - Ursula K. Le Guin
Relationships:
Ged/Tenar (Earthsea)
Solo: Tenar
Tenar & Tehanu
Tenar is my forever fave, and so I'm requesting fic that focuses on her in some way. You can go shippy with Tenar/Ged, you can explore her motherly relationship with Tehanu, or you can focus exclusively on Tenar. I am especially interested in stuff that focuses on the Tombs of Atuan or Tehanu eras, but I would not be opposed to looking in on what she was up to in between those two times. She's so ripe for exploring themes of identity and agency and what it is to be a woman. I feel like if you focus on her, you can't go wrong.
But here are a few prompts if you like:
+ Canon divergence where Ged doesn't have that no-romance spell on himself and they fall in love soon after they first meet
+ Canon divergence where she never leaves Atuan or doesn't leave for some years after the book
+ Anything set post-Tehanu where Tenar and Tehanu grapple with Tehanu's newly-revealed identity as a dragon. Does Tenar's background help her to help Tehanu navigate this?
Fandom: This Is New Gehesran Calling - Rebecca Fraimow
Relationships:
Worldbuilding or any
I don't care at all about which characters/relationships you focus on, I just want more of those sweet, sweet diaspora/exile feels! I'd love to learn more about New Gehesran culture, the specifics of why it fell and why all the characters are in exile, further bonding via pirate radio, other ways the exiles keep New Gehesran culture alive, etc.
Fandom: The Dazzle of Day - Molly Gloss
Characters:
Worldbuilding or any
Again, this isn't about specific characters or relationships for me. Instead it's about the whole world of their generation ship, the Quaker-inspired ways that the communities make decisions, what it must feel like to spend your whole life on a ship in route to a future that is really just a possibility and not a guarantee at all. Or about the first generation of settlers on the new planet, confronting what life outside of the ship is actually like. If you write about any of those things, I will be very happy.
Fandom: The Queen's Thief - Megan Whalen Turner
Characters:
Attolia | Irene/Eugenides (Queen's Thief)
Worldbuilding
Anything Gen/Irene will make me happy to be honest, as will anything character-focused on Irene or that explores Gen's relationship with the gods. I also love the supporting characters (especially Costis and Kamet), so incorporate as many of them as you wish (and throw in some Costis/Kamet or Irene/Gen/Costis if you want).
Things I love: Gen's relationship with the GODS!!!!, assassination attempts, ignoring the angsty future of Moira's Pen, Kamet and Gen matching wits, mutual pining, political/court intrigue.
A handful of totally optional prompts:
+ Irene has to interact with the god(s) in some way
+ Assassination attempts! Especially if they end in either Irene or Ged protecting each other or passing judgement on their attackers
+ Wedding night crying and ink pot throwing?
+ Anything where either Ged or Irene (or better yet, both!) have to use their political wiles to navigate some dangerous situation
Fandom: Spindle's End - Robin McKinley
Relationships:
Worldbuilding
I'm just here for the worldbuilding! I would be happy with a story about any of the existing characters from the book or even about OCs. The opening paragraphs of this book are some of my favorite in all of literature, if that's helpful in showing you what I'm wanting here. I just love the domestic magic of this world, how everyday and tactile it is, the way it manifests in such whimsical and unexpected ways. McKinley has such a talent for rooting magic in place and in material culture, and I would be delighted by anything that dives into that.
Fandom: Summers at Castle Auburn - Sharon Shinn
Relationships:
Coriel Halsing/Kent Ouvrelet
I won't lie, I'm really just requesting this for either some missing scenes between these two or a canon divergence about them. I really like this pairing and yet I don't think that we saw enough of their interactions "onscreen." They're just two such good people who have lots of priorities besides each other and are both very concerned about justice and fairness and compassion. I'd like to see more of them learning to appreciate each other, becoming close, falling in love, etc.
Fandom: Chalice - Robin McKinley
Relationships:
Solo: Mirasol (Chalice)
Bees & Mirasol | Chalice (Chalice)
The Master | Liapnir/Mirasol | Chalice (Chalice)
I lovelovelove Mirasol, Liapnir, and the worldbuilding of this book. I really don't feel like you can go wrong here--if you focus on any of those things, I will be so happy.
Just a couple of prompts for this one:
+ Canon divergence where Liapnir's brother doesn't send him to the fire monks and instead he and Mirasol end up dealing with life in their demesne under a brutal leader
+ Canon divergence where Liapnir hurts Mirasol more badly than he did in canon
+ Post-canon fic about Liapnir figuring out how to be human again or the two of them adjusting to marriage--that cannot be an easy thing when one of them hasn't been human for so long!
+ Alternately, anything at all about Mirasol growing into her powers, getting to know the Willowlands, etc.
Fandom: When the Angels Left the Old Country - Sacha Lamb
Relationships:
Ashmedai | Little Ash/The Angel | Uriel
Ashmedai | Little Ash & The Angel | Uriel & Rose Cohen
Worldbuilding (When the Angels Left the Old Country)
Look, I'm just here for the Judaism. (And that's only a mild exaggeration.) Little Ash and Uriel are some of my favorite characters I've come across in a while--their dynamic is wonder in every single way, and if you want to throw Rose in there, too, please do!
I'm leaning towards wanting something from their time in Shtetl and if you want to write a fic about them just arguing about some obscure aspect of Torah DO IT!!!
Fandom: The Steel Seraglio - Mike Carey & Linda Carey & Louise Carey
Relationships:
Solo: Rem
Solo: Zuleika
Solo: Gursoon
WB: Inhabitants of Bessa
I love the vibes of this book and how about women it is. I didn't request any relationships, but you can include any that you want to include or you can go the worldbuilding route and/or focus on original characters. I'm just fascinated by a city of women and what that looks like and what their problems would be. Feel free to let your imagination run wild!
